What Should I Have Said to This Farang Lady?

The other night after surveying the go-gos on Walking Street I went to get a schwarma at the truck on Soi Arab (or whatever it's called). A western lady was eying the truck sceptically, so I told her the schwarmas there are tasty indeed. She thanked me for the information.

As we waited for our food, she said "Can I ask you a question?"

I of course assented.

She asked "What possibly brings you here to Pattaya?"

Her question was dripping with judgment, as if Pattaya could not possibly be the place for anyone normal.

My answer was automatic--I rarely encounter the western look-down-the-nose attitude anymore, so I reverted to my old defensiveness.

"I work here" was my answer.

"Oh." She said, as if it were now possible that I might have a semblance of normalcy.

Since then, I've been racking my brain as to possible comebacks. It was a great opportunity to come back with a real zinger, yet I missed it.

So Gentlemen, over to you. Do you have any appropriate retorts?

So what do you think you should have said?

I think you just answered your own question.

Why answer her with some snide comment?

Sir, I do believe the OP was asking -- how to deal with someone being snide to you.

Sure, you could go the noble route, and be polite and dignified... but where is the fun in that???

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
