KimDidMeGood
Not mentioning that those soldiers are most likely native of the region, not going to antagonize their own people.
Vintage_Kwai
Sigh. Train was not 'seized', they just blocked the tracks and prevented the train from leaving. Flash, different sets of nutters, each with their own agendas.
Flashermac
Time to change LOS to LOL (Land of the Loonies)? A major problem right now is that the red and yellow can ONLY see their own viewpoint and will not listen to anything else. Sondhi makes outrageous statements and his yellow shirts buy it lock, stock and barrel. The Takkyite leaders make equally ridiculous and outrageous charges, and the rank and file snap to attention and raise their arm in salute. It is almost a cartoon version of politics. preahko
Well, there are several things going on here. One: soldiers with orders not to start firing....YET. Two: some soldiers (many?) who sympathize with the Reds. Three (and this is the biggest, though it must be stated the most delicately): there are LARGER FORCES at work here, "backroom deals," strings being pulled [And let's leave it at that, okay? - KS]
shygye
From what region do most of the Thai draftees originate?
Mekong
The Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES) has sent a joint force of police and soldiers to Khon Kaen province to ensure law and order after red-shirts prevented a train transporting soldiers and vehicles from leaving the railway station on Wednesday, and continue to block it, CRES spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Thursday. CRES will also issue a summon warrant for red-shirt leader and Puea Thai Party MP Jatuporn Prompan because he was found to be involved in the red-shirts' action, he said. Four companies of the joint force had been sent to Khon Kaen, he said. The train was en route to Pattani's Yarang district, but the protesters in Khon Kaen refused to acceptthis and claimed the soldiers and vehicles were being sent to Bangkok to help disperse the red-shirt protesters at Ratchaprasong intersection. Col Sansern said the army also has 600 troops on standby in the province for deployment if needed. Link
Wallenda
Ummm ... so tell me what the US Army would do against people blocking their passage in the US? Machine gun them? Blow them away with grenades? Send in the Marines??? My guess is that a large enough group of them to appear intimidating would be sent there (if they weren't on the train already), with weapons, and someone in authority would take a bullhorn and instruct the thugs in an authoritative tone to clear the way immediately. If they didn't, then it would move to the next step: clear the way or you will be moved out of the way by force. And if they didn't, they would do that. The fact that protestors have already killed people means the stance of gentle treatment is over now. That's what the soldiers were making clear over in Silom -- orders were to use live ammo if necessary. That's how it'll be going forward, and anyone facing down authorities now will realize that they'll be treated as potential killers this time and not peaceful protestors. But basically, it wouldn't be ALLOWED to happen in the US. They'd be on it in no time. Hillary Clinton remarked about a year ago how what goes on in the northwest of Pakistan would never be tolerated in the US. Not to whoop it up for the US, but I think in almost any first-world country these kinds of things we see daily now in Thailand wouldn't be allowed to happen. Or even almost ANY country, except for your failed or very dysfunctional countries (Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Congo, etc.). It's fine company Thailand's military is putting itself in. A little suspense is always thrilling but the whole thing is getting very slow. Those redshirts physical ugliness is an eyesore for every visitor. Hope it blows up soon in a bloodbath. Mekong
The red shirts in Khon Kaen on Thursday's afternoon agreed to release their blockade of the military train bounded for reinforcement in Pattani, officials said. The train was blocked since Wednesday on suspicion that the soldiers, military vehicles and supplies might be diverted for anti-riot operation against the red shirts in Rajprasong, Bangkok. Under the deal, the military agreed for 10 red shirts to accompany the train to ensure it reaching the destination in the Deep South. Link
