Coss
{New Zealand's government has apologised for the remarks, describing them as "culturally insensitive and vulgar". } I'm with the government on this one. {OK, pardon me for being a little insensitive. What's the big deal? If it was said by a NZ government official, okay, I'd understand. This was said by a tv presenter who I presume is not connected to or in the employ of the NZ government, right? } Chocolate Steve, you are of course, absolutely right. But by way of illumination: NZ has about 4 million people and we really do view ourselves, as one big family. That and being an island nation, has lead us to view the rest of the world as vulgar arrogant bastards, completely opposite to us nice, polite and deferential Kiwis. 30 odd years of feminist and minority group rule (and some of those years were more odd than others) has had us develop into (in my opinion) one of the most politically correct backwaters on the planet. We take great pride in our multi cultural society (e.g. Auckland has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world) and to suggest anything about anyone, one has to make sure there are no race, gender, or other tones that may cause offence. It would have been OK to note the name and it's pronunciation, but to link that to being Indian is not. Paul Henry made fame for these kind of remarks, in part, by noting that a guest he'd just interviewed was a woman with a moustache. As indeed she was. No prizes for stating the obvious. Society nearly collapsed, T shirts were printed. So on the one hand you are right, mind you the TV station he works for is owned by the government. This is one dipshit's comments and small, small beer. On the other hand, make one rude comment to a lesbian with a mullet 'round here and you'll be lucky to escape a prison sentence. Right, now, if we could just get those bastard Australians to stop stealing our talent and claiming our achievements as theirs, we'd set the world to rights... Steve
I can understand the government or any government apolgizing on behalf of what a citizen did. Its the politically correct thing to do. What I think is over doing it is the Indian government calling in the NZ consulate rep for a formal complaint. WTF? The only thing I can think of its to make themselves look like they are taking names and kicking ass to the people. Coss, I dated a NZ girl several years ago (broke my heart as well...lol)and met a few other Kiwis through her. Never had a bad experience with the lot of them. Great folks to hang out with and espeically have a drink with. I know they are rivals of some sort but pretty much the same with Aussies as well. I want to go for a visit one day. USVirgin
My cousin played rugby at UCSB (or some such) and displayed a 'women play rugby too!' bumper sticker on her car. I didn't have the heart to tell her she wasn't hot enough looking to have that bumper sticker work to her advantage.
USVirgin
CS: Not much experience with NZ girls, but I did acquaint with a blond at a knocking shop in Auckland that was a 10 on anyones' blonde scale. When she learned I was from LA, she was too eager to share her Disneyland experience, sponsored by another customer. So much for 'the girl fresh from the farm' experience, but she was great. When I worked at LAX, I was once assigned to escort Miss Universe (NZ) between terminals as she connected from NZ to somewhere else. We treated he as an unaccompanied minor (meaning paperwork had to be signed off between airlines/guardians), even though she was at least 18. Raised an eyebrow when I handed her over to Delta (IIRC). "Yeah, I know she's not a child, but she's Miss Universe so please sign her off and make sure she gets on the plane, OK?" I chatted with her while walking her between terminals, and she seemed like a sweet enough kid, who had never been to Disneyland yet, as far as I knew. Can you imagine trekking 1/4 mile outdoors at LAX with Miss Universe, without paparazzi all over you nowadays?
Coss
I saw the NZ women's rugby team in action the other day, and to my great surprise, amongst the lumbering behemoths were a couple of cuties. Well dress me in pink and send me to San Francisco
