Macbook Air

Quite right, why barfine a beautiful thai bar girl, when for a fifth of the price, I could get a girl who looks like Jonah Lomu in a dress, with 3 times the stamina?

:)

I'll admit, the MacBook Air really looks good.

Funny, with lots of Apple users the first thing they mention about their new object of desire is how beautiful it looks and how cool it is.

23 years in IT the main questions I always get are 'What can it do?' (or the variation 'Can it do what we need it for?') and 'How much does it cost?'.

As others said, the price tag makes it a niche product.

And because this is a forum about LOS:

A starfish is worse than an ugly bird. With an ugly bird at least I know about the fact and I'm free to choose.

Ok, an ugly starfish is even worse. But that's the girls problem that I am ugly and let her do all the work :-)

I think for daily use there isn't much difference in regard to hardware anymore, unless you are a power user.

IMHO today usability and design are becoming more and more important and in both fields Apple beats all competitors.

As other said, you can do a lot of stuff with 300 USD netbooks,

but first as a power user I need a stronger machine

and second as someone who spends 10-12 hours a day (= many years of my life in total) in front a PC I really want to work with best working and best looking machines.

Anyway, also as I said the Macbook Air is nothing for me. For leisure (and leisure travel) I might look for an iPad, while for work it is an 27" iMac, a 24" iMac and a Macbook pro...

The only problem with my first generation Air is that the casing is extremely thin and and the screen cracks easily. Costs $900 to repair. I broke it on my first flight.

There is a shell that slips on to make it more durable, which I now use. But I only travel with it in a hard case rather than a soft sided one. Other than that, it's wonderful, does everything I need and I love it dearly. Worth every penny.

I suppose I should say a Macbook Air for me would be travelling gear, as like Kamui I have other gear for different purposes.

Like an iPhone for handiness,

and a Mac Mini for a family computer,

and an old purple iMac for my Dad,

a couple of old laptops (PB5300, 1400cs) for genetics (don't ask),

a MacBook for general use,

and a dual core G5 PowerMac with multiple terabytes of firewire storage for Final Cut and Reason.

So if one were looking at only one computer then perhaps an Air is a little light.

But the original post was look! Gorgeous! Drool!

Cheers

Here's an article about the MacBook Air. A quite positive article I might add.

What's also in the article is that Apple kind of cheated a little to achieve longer battery life.

They forgot to install flash.

Adobe flash player is known to using (wasting) a lot power. Not Apples fault. Still, leaving out flash from the test cycle makes the battery last longer and the MacBook Air look better compared to other notebooks and netbooks.

As I understand most notebook and netbook manufacturers include flash in their test cycles to determine battery life.

One might to keep that in mind when comparing battery life.

Well I brought one, and it does look great and feel fantastic in the hand.

I bought the basic 13" and for what I need it for:

1. Working on documents;

2. Watching the NFL on NFL gamepass;

3. Free pron on youporn or redtube when young lasses, or even mature Thai girls who want to be adventurous to see such things; and

4. Surfing the internet,

it works great.

Also, one cannot begrudge that it is so much easier to tow around

Power users, who are these mythical creatures? Give me a beer, a girl by my side and surf the web all at the same time, who wants more.

You're from Oz but you watch the NFL? Well. Damn.

BTW, I've seen a couple of these now (Air) carried by people I know, and they are pretty sweet. One thing I like A LOT are the new trackpads the multiple gestures they support.

But, still, it's good to criticize Apple and be vocal about it, I like to think that's the reason there's more than 1 USB port, and they addressed overheating and battery issues.

But yeah, it's a nice piece of work.

Yes, I did the 9 month backpack travel around the US of A when I was in my earlier 30's. I watched a couple of live NFL games (2 in Seattle & 1 in San Francisco). I think most Australian don't appreciate how fast or tough the game is unless they see a top line match live

PS The quality of the streaming on the Macair is excellent, good sound for what it is and so easy to tote around (especially with the longer battery life).
