The superintendent of Pho Kaew Police Station, Colonel Passakorn Klanwan, has been slapped with a transfer order for allowing an entertainment venue in his jurisdiction to stay open beyond authorised hours and welcome under-age patrons.

The Full Moon Pub in Nakhon Pathom's Omyai area was still bustling when Narcotics Suppression Division 1 commander Maj-General Saengsoon Kannasut and his team made a surprise raid at about 3.30am yesterday.

Inside, police and officials from the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission found more than 300 patrons aged under 18. The youngest was just 14. A zone inside the pub also operated as a gambling den.

Records kept at the Full Moon Pub suggested it paid Bt500 to 20 policemen each day.

"We will investigate the matter," Saengsoon said.

Police spokesman Maj-General Prawut Thawonsiri said the raid was conducted after young revellers caught dancing topless near Silom Road during the Songkran festival told police that the Full Moon Pub offered free drinks to girls who showed their breasts.

Provincial Police Region 7 commissioner Lt-General Pongsan Jiam-on said a fact-finding committee had been set up to investigate how the Full Moon Pub could flout the law.

"If the investigation shows local policemen have taken bribes, they will face harsh punishments," he said.

[color:red]Passakorn tried to dismiss the bribe claim, saying that Bt500 was given to policemen only for security provided. [color:gray]{that is, to make sure all the law breaking went on in a secure and sharing and caring environment...}

Pongsan said Passakorn had been transferred to the Provincial Police Region 7 office.

Starting yesterday, he will have to work at the office for 30 days while Nakhon Pathom deputy police chief Colonel Krissana Jamsawang fills in as acting superintendent of Pho Kaew police station.

I wonder if this prompted the crackdowns - from an editorial by Abhisit's cousin:

<< It is not just corruption in the sense that officials take bribes and allow wrongdoing to take place. The acceptance that nothing can be done about the sex trade in Thailand, that this is part of a "normal" way of life, corrupts the minds of the people and bleaches into the ethical fabric of a society.

[color:red]The three teenagers, aged 13, 14 and 16, should not be blamed for society's misconduct; why should they fall prey and become the national scapegoat for their misconduct, even though news reports said they admitted to having intentionally danced topless. They had been drinking with friends before leaving home and for them, to dance in such a manner was nothing strange since they had been to "an entertainment place that has naked shows in exchange for the price of admission and drinks; where if one went bottomless, they could win a complimentary bottle of whiskey"!

If our youth are thinking along these lines, then we definitely have more problems to deal with than just fining the three girls. The police and government authorities, by clamping down on the girls, and the enthusiasts who posted the video clips on the internet demonstrate the Thai hypocrisy and denial. By trying to quickly close the case and getting the news off the front page, the authorities are not addressing the real problem at all. >>

So business must have been fantastic. :hmmm:

Perhaps more like 9500 baht a day to one policeman and 500 baht a day between the remaining 19.
