Do a Youtube search on how to open a hotel safe - it isn't exactly confidence inspiring.

Red....just to substantiate my point I have just checked into U Tube

Search....I keyed in:.....How to open a Hotel Safe....

There were 48,100 results

That's why I suggested opening a Thai Bank a/c.....it ain't Rocket Science

Cheers DS

... but Thai banks will not protect you if there are fraudulent transactions on the ATM card! So if your ATM card gets cloned you are SOL. :shakehead

Keep a Schwab account for spending money (no ATM fees, excellent fraud protection), keep a Bangkok Bank account for rent, bills, small emergency fund - also spending money on occasion - and never even a modicum of a problem, helpful reps at the bank. Keep a California Credit Union account - that I don't touch.

One time I was ripped off, about 12k baht, was also cash left in room. Everything has risk - it's a hierarchy of values. Bangkok Bank has proved excellent value for me personally (pay all bills, rent, school, etc from my laptop or phone).

Pick your poison.

Or bury your cash in Mason Jars out in the swamp.

I found Bangkok Bank to be very user unfriendly when I as chasing up some funds a couple of years ago (my Divorce) They actually had the cheek to ask my lawyer to take out a 30,000 Baht insurance fund in order to chase the paperwork. We went straight to family court and got an injunction against them on the same day, cheeky bastards.

Maybe it's my own personal experiences but I found BBL and Kasikorn totallly lacking in customer service whereas Siam Commercial, Krung Thai and even Thanachart could not do enough to assist me.

Like most like minded expats I keep the bare minimum of currency in Thailand, my 400.000 THB for 3 months before renewing Non-Imm O and a few grand in Siam Commercial. I prefer my funds in Standard Chartered Hong Kong and HSBC Singapore.

To be honest heard good and bad anecdotes about Kasikorn and Bangkok Bank prior to making a decision. Wife of friend worked at Bangkok Bank so that was that (peer pressure). :) Worked out well for me but not talking about significant amounts of cash or any confusing issues.

Also heard great things about HSBC, however coming from the US - Schwab was a no-brainer - their fraud protection is top notch and they reimburse any/all ATM fees overseas. YMMV. Sorry about the issues with your divorce.

JR,

We each have personal opinions about financial institutions based upon our own experiences at the time.

I understand you preference for Schwab, with myself being a Brit HSBC and Standard Chartered are my banks of choice, but I will stay quiet about my Swiss, Cayman Island and BVI accounts.

No worries about the divorce, it took nearly 2 years and 3 separate courts but I eventually won, farangs can win against thais if they are in the right, I was close to a nervous breakdown and became an alcoholic, 3 weeks in detox sorted me out, now I fell great.

Except that you didn't. :shakehead

Kong, you've posted 8 times I think on this thread and about 5 of your posts are about you not the thread (including slipping in about your overseas accounts?).

On the London Contingent thread, which has nothing to do with you, you post six times about yourself. No wonder some of us think you're a dick and don't feel the need to meet you. Try sticking to the topics and talk less about yourself, something you've been doing as long as I've been a BM, and maybe you'd get a bit more respect.
