The Thainess Thread

Strange you should be talking about this topic, in fact only yesterday I was in the palace with some German tourists who were relatives of a good friend and expat working here in Thailand. They remarked how ludicrously cheap the taxis in Bangkok were and also the admission charge, and had no problem with myself being admitted free.

The tourists that I have met over the years who vacation in Thailand for just a few weeks, really don't count up the 20 bahts as if they are counting a fortune. Or worry about telling a taxi driver to keep the change or giving him a 100 baht tip or something. Tourists simply don't care they are on holiday to enjoy themselves and spend money accordingly.

Now being an expat is entirely different, many are on limited resources perhaps a pension or limited savings, where money has to be taken more seriously. But these particular farang are not visiting tourist attractions as much, and if there is the odd instance they might want to, the admission fees are no more than the price of a packet of cigarettes in their own countries.

Conversely one could argue that taxis are ludicrously expensive in Germany and a Tourist who visits and attraction on alternate days does so less than an expat who visits once per month, statistics can be manipulated two ways, Plus, the packet of cigarettes argument does not fly with non smokers.

What really gets up my nose, being a farang I must have a big nose, what pisses most of us off is the underhand way that they go about it, prices will be shown as

๒๠in Thai and 200 in Arabic (yes Romanic Numerals are

referred to as arabic) how many non Thais can read Thai Numerals, this to me shows intent to rip off non thai's.

As for Diamond encrusted Rolex, most westerners I know in Thailand don't even wear jewellery let alone a watch, Pierre Cardin shoes dream on, many times it pays not to advertise, Armani suit, like who the fuck wears a suit in Bangkok, a no label shirt and trousers freshly laundered and crisply ironed are just as good as long as one out of the shower and smelling good.

Majority of westerners I know in Thailand are not flash show offs pushing it into locals faces but good honest people who chose to live in Thailand in a non offensive manner, we don't like getting ripped off due to the colour of our skin or size of our noses.

This level of xenophobia would have made Hitler blush.

To be fair, a lot of very wealthy Thai's I know, don't flash their wealth that much. Their children do, and it's sickening, but often the parents are far more conservative in their displays of wealth.

One chap comes to mind, I've had many great times with him, he owns his own helicopter, not a small Robinson but a serious beast, multiple exotic cars, but he's calculating, the cars he's bought have had historical significance, and increase in value,

And best of all, he was one of the few people, when down on my arse, I retreated to my wife's village, who fly up to visit and stay with us.

Nice guy,

You have just summed up the well to do Thai's Never flash it or show off

Where as us poor farangs don't flash it as we don't have it (hehe)

This is why I like my "Average Thai Friends" they are just that, average, No Diamond encrusted Rolex no Snake Skin Shoes, just try to be average.

People such as this are accepted into my social circle, the guys and gals whom dispose of their gold card before talking the shit with me are OK, lets drop our wallets at the door and see how we are as people.

I recognise the fact that it is inverse socialism but I still enjoy the fact that people still call me incorrect, I am sure that more than one BM on this forum would back me up as a Capitalist Socialist i.e. some prick whom still supports social investments. This thread has made me angry.

I should never talk about my Third World Investments or discuss about how I try to make life better for the investors within such an environment, I have MAJOR time for such gentlemen

PTBM, keep up the good work my friend, some of us support you!
