AVM Prapas Sornchaidee, spokesman of the air force, said the F-16A jet crashed in an agricultural field in Chaturat district during its training session and its pilot ejected safely.

An F-16A fighter aircraft of the Royal Thai Air Force crashed in farmland in Chaiyaphum province, away from communities.

The pilot was identified as Flt Lt Pakorn Pisitsart with 782 hours of total flight time. He sustained injury in his right arm and neck and was admitted to the hospital of Wing 1 in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The F-16 ADF jet number 10331 had been used in the United States Air Force for 20 years from 1981 and the Royal Thai Air Force bought it in 2003. The plane had been in use for over 40 years.

The crash affected farmland and the air force will restore it to its previous condition soon.
Investigators of the air force reached the crash site to find the cause of the crash and check details of the damage. (TNA)

In that case the F16 must be a really crap aircraft.

By comparison the Typhoon Eurojet introduced in 2003 (18 years compared to 20) has had 9 crashes for 406 aircraft  produced, 2.21% based on number of aircraft not flight hours

That is 8 times as many aircraft than Thailand with the same number of crashes. Or 16,66%

There have been 4600 F16’s produced of which 340 have crashed or 7.39%

So the Typhoon is over 3.3 times safer than the F16, and Thailand have more than twice as many crashes for F16 than global average, including those shot down in battle.

But the Thais did not buy 40 year old aircraft they bought new and have done so for 20 years the same time the Typhoon has been in service.

if I was to offer you a 2022 Porsche 911 would you tell me “No thanks, that is a 59 years old car?” I doubt it

A 2022 F15 is far more advanced than when they were first introduced.

My 1970 911 is shit mechanically and difficult to maintain than my 2021 (if I had them)

 

However then plane in question

So it's a 40 year old plane. That's not new, they did buy some new, and also took 2nd hand from Singapore

I disagree a 1970 911 May require more maintenance than a 2021 model but not necessary easier to maintain due to modern vehicles being much like English dinners, chips with everything.

35 years ago I built my own Rally Car, OK not 1971 911 but a mid 70’s Ford. The only specialist equipment I needed to hire was an Engine Hoist and an Air Compressor for paint respray. With todays cars I wouldn’t know where to start.

With aircraft (as well as cars) maintenance is base on manhours flown (miles driven) and no age alone, The house required for routine (preventative) maintenance require fixed during the aircrafts lifecycle. It is replacement maintenance hours which increase over time.. Maintenance requirements are base on man hours in service (miles driven) not actual age.

In peacetime an aircraft incident is due to either Pilot Error of Poor Maintenance, nothing to do with age of model. Unlike cars, aircraft just don’t breakdown. Maintenance is to maintain airworthiness.

So, if age is not an issue, which it isn’t, why is Thailand having twice as many incidents as global average, bad pilots or poor maintenance?
