Coss
... Meanwhile, honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, Chukiat Opaswong, warned that the US reciprocal tariff would affect Thai rice exports, as Thailand had a market share of over 850,000 tonnes last year. He expects the reciprocal tariff to push the price of Thai jasmine rice in the US to $1,400 per tonne, compared to Vietnamese rice, which would be priced at $600-700 per tonne. He cautioned that US consumers would likely choose Vietnamese rice over Thai rice. ... and ... Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Thailand is prepared to negotiate with the U.S. after Trump announced a 36% “reciprocal” tariff on its goods. The U.S. is Thailand’s largest export market. Shinawatra said that Thailand’s actual tariff rate on U.S. imports is on average 9% rather than the 72% figure the White House presented. ... Mekong
Well Chukiat Opaswong is talking out of his fucking arse since Vietnam (46%) has been hit with a higher tariff than Thailand (37%) so Thai rice exports will be cheaper than Vietnam not more expensive. You need to look at both parts of the equation before trying to con another Shinawatra into a rice buying scam. Poor little Paetongtarm still believing tariffs applied are based on countries tariffs and not trade deficit, if only she had read my idiots guide to the idiots tariffs posted yesterday she would understand a little better, you would expect the PM of a country to have some understanding on a topic before commenting on such
bust
That's a 9% tariff difference but if Vietnamese rice is around 50% cheaper
Mekong
# 19 minutes ago, bust said: That's a 9% tariff difference but if Vietnamese rice is around 50% cheaper So Vietnamese rice is cheaper pre tariff than post tariff, Thailand will be better off not worse off AFAIK Price of Vietnamese rice has not been decreased because of tariffs
bust
By my sums it's cheaper pre and post tariff but happy to be corrected
Mekong
Correct it was cheaper both pre and post tariff but using the figures taken from the internet Comparison Pre Tariff Thai Rice $425 per tonne Viet Rice $397 per tonne Difference $28 Post Tariff Thai Rice 37% tariff $425 x 1.37 = $582.25 per tonne Viet Rice 47% tariff $397 x 1.47 = $583.59 per tonne Difference $1.34 So before the tariff Thai rice was 7% more expensive (where did you get 50% from)and post tariff less than 0.25% more expensive. So Thai rice has become MORE competitive not LESS and I don’t understand what Chukiat Opaswong is complaining about

Maybe I miss interpreted his meaning or his information is incorrect. Regardless he has just sent the global economy into a 60% chance of a recession. What a lunatic and whoever is advising him equally. One other thing I have heard discussed as the possibility of privatizing certain social entities. Strip them, Fire Sale them and hand them over to his buddies to control with Government funding.
Mekong
And as I said Chukiat Opaswong is talking out of his fucking arse The $600-700 per tonne isn’t realistic pre tariff is is $597 per tonne so after tariff it will be $877 per tonne Take a Produce call it product (a) Vietnam sells for $1000 Thailand sells for $2000 After tariff Vietnam $1470 Thailand $2740 The price delta has fallen from 2:1 to 1.86:1, whilst still more expensive it is more competitive than previous. What Khun Opaswong is referring to is the situation whereby Vietnam negotiate a tariff of Zero percent with USA, he is basically complaining about something which hasn’t happened
Old Hippie
Think I read that they agreed to go back to the way it was before and basically leave it alone…the dump will be claiming victory any minute now…
