BelgianBoy
Limbo, I believe its 3 consecutive wins..... And he will never win L-B-L or the Amstel, cos its not in his program to do so....... BB
limbo
BB, 3 consecutive indeed, forgot about Aitor Gonzalez' stage win of stage 14. However, still not bad, in the last 7 stages 5 wins. So why is he every year within the top 5 of those mentioned one day classsics?
sayjann
listening to a debate about the best all round Sportsmen on the radio today and many votes for many People but the talk came up about Armstrong. People were comparing him with Eddy Merckx and who was better?. Armstrong was obviously lauded for his 6 TDF wins, but in my opinion Eddy was a better rider. he competed in many races unlike Armstrong and the only man to win the 3 jerseys in the TDF. http://www.kings5.freeserve.co.uk/merckxpalmares.htm
limbo
Hi Sayjann, One more time we can agree, Merckx is definately #1 in my book too.
BelgianBoy
Sayjann & Limbo, OH! yes, no way to compare..... Merckx's nickname was the cannibale, he won just everything, and stayed away in '73 on purpose because of the bad press he got in France, he could have won 7 IMO. Once he stayed away, once he was punched in the liver........ And still 34 yellow jerseys compare to 'only' 21 for Amstrong. BB
BelgianBoy
PS : looks like his son Axel will sign up for Amstrongs' team though.....
sayjann
am i right in saying that after winning 5 TDF's he came 2nd in 1 while competing with a broken jaw?. seem to remember hearing that sometime.....
BelgianBoy
Sayjann, Nope, he had won 4 times already, then stayed away in 74, came back in 75, was hit in the liver and lost the race and yellow jersey because of that, Thevenet won that year. He came again in 76, but did not win anything....... Tell you what.... follow the link in my OP, I seem to remember a history link or a search engine year by year. Steve
Broken jaw. Armstrong had diseased nuts. Nothing tops diseased nuts. Armstrong hands down..but then again I'm biased being American. ::
sayjann
thanks for your info BB. i was not sure about the broken jaw or when it was. the 70's is far too early for me to remember and i am only thinking aloud about what i heard from the Media.
