your claim to fame?

Well if I accept the premise that one's claim to fame is association or close brushes with famous people, which seems odd, then mine would be as follows:

- Met long time US Senator when he was just starting out and my grandfather was helping him with his campaign. Same Senator had then president Nixon personally sign a photo for me. I was 6 or 7 at the time. Several years later I shredded the photo when I started to have political feelings. Stupid in retrospect as regardless of my views on Nixon it was a pretty cool keepsake. Oh well.

- When I was about 11 or 12 I was on a flight with my family coming back from Disney World and happened to be sitting next to the daughter of then Bruins coach Harry Sinden. We started talking and after a while she asked if I'd like to get any Bruins autographs. I asked for my favorite at the time, goalie Gerry Cheevers to which she replied "don't you want my dad's autograph too?" "Ughh, oh yeah him too, I guess." Real smooth.

- Was a close friend of the daughter of one of the few billionaires on the Forbes list back in the early 80's. As a result I got to see the behind the scenes reality behind many national news stories regarding the family and its business.

- There are close brushes with famous people as well but as they were fleeting it would take more brain power to list than I am willing to expend this early in the morning. :p

- In Thailand there was the time that I went to Wat Rawaii to see Luang Por Koon. Got a front row kneeling position in this long line as the venerable monk was escorted (pretty much carried) by his handlers through the throng of people. Got to exchange my regular money for a lucky LPK 1,000 Baht note. As of yet I have not won the lottery or come into the millions I expected so I'm thinking seriously of asking for a refund. :banghead:

Well that's my list of guilt by association. Or at least what I can think of as I get ready to jump in the shower.

1. Not so great, but really weird: Worked a 1 day gig with Ed Kramer, the Jewish Giant . 1971. Three of us were coming off a night of lysergic-25 and and all-night bowling, when my tripping buddy's Dad called us to work with Ed. Dressed the Giant in a giant Santa Claus suit, took (tried to take) Polaroid photos with kids sitting on his lap (this was way before everybody was doing the photo thing). Didn't work- kids ran away screaming at the sight of giant, crippled Santa Claus.

2. Not so great, but a blast from the past: 1983. Got stoned with Jorma Kaukonen, the original Neanderthal Uni-brow, of the Airplane . His underage girlfriend was a student of mine and got me into the dressing room at a gig. He asked me to keep an eye on his guitar for awhile.

3. Not so great, but continues the Giant Sagas: 1988 or so. Had drinks with Andre the Giant and his bodyguards at a hotel in Virginia Beach.

4. Not so great, but fun: 2000. Was hired by the Democratic Caucus to teach all of the Democratic Congressman and their wives how to Swing Dance at a weekend conference they were holding in Afton, VA, USA. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s wife was one of the sexiest low-dipping babes I've ever held. Thought the Secret Service was gonna shoot me when she just threw herself on her back into my <eager> hands.

5. Not so great, but maybe most useful: 2002. Met a bunch of Thai muckety-mucks, including the Director-General of the Thai Department of Labor and Protection, Thapabutr Jamasevi, at a small conference at General Electric's plant in Charlottesville, VA, 2 years ago. He gave me his card and told me to see him if I was ever in Thailand again. Dropped by his office Wednesday. Have my new work permit in hand.

6. Not so great, but what a slut: ca. 1993. Tending bar at a hotel in Charlottesville, VA. Closing, told to go to a room to get a room service order. Went, but politely told the woman and her half-naked lesbian lover that it was past legal serving time. I was then "Fuck you'd", soundly cursed and chased from the room by a very livid, very wasted, very exposed Courtney Love (and her scary faces) . That no talent waste of 5 good hits of heroin Kurt Kobain deserved every skanky inch of her. :cover:

7. Assorted also-rans: Taught at a prestigious private school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the early 80's. 3 prize students: John Lennon's kid Shawn (Sean?), Cher's daughter Chastity and Ira Levin's son. Best absence note: "Please excuse my son for being absent. Signed, Ira Levin", with a big writer's flourish. Chat with Susan Lucci (perennial TV Award runner-up) at a Hampton's eatery

Amazing thread.........

It is quite amazing, funny or even surprising at how quickly people will want to tell of the rich & famous they have brushed encounters with.

Apparantly, it does enhance your own ego........ not that i can blame anyone, maybe food for a separate discussion ?

I have met Belgian and Thai royalty, politicians, moviestars, and I am still good friends with a very famous ex-F1 racer.

No need for names :p

Oh!, and I met quite a large portion of this board as well.......
