greedisgood
Listening to NPR news tonight and they mentioned that the engineer killed today lived in Thailand, with his wife, for the last 10 years in between jobs. Anyone hear anything like this ?
Nervous_Dog
Was on another board, very sad, a Washington Square bloke I think from reading
Zaad
That's incredibly sad! I still can't understand what people (farangs) are doing in Iraq, it's not a minor risk anymore, it's proven to be a huge risk. It's definitely not worth being there right now, not for any purpose. My message to them... GET THE FUCK OUT OF THAT PLACE!
Guest lazyphil
Did anyone care to warn him (re: HIV GF thread)...or was common sense needed?
Zaad
LP, I assume he was warned many times, but took his chances. We can never wanrs such people enough. If you don't know about the dangers, you'll underestimate it, like HIV, that's what kills people.
Zorro
I know a few blokes in Iraq and they know the risks. They are being paid between 20,000- 30,000 US tax free a month. Everyone has their price. I am not sure that i am any safer in Saudi and i am only getting half as much as these guys.

Zaad
Courageous, stupidity, ... combination of many factors? All I know is that I won't come near that area. It doesn't guarantee my safety, I'm aware of that, but it sure as hell makes me *feel* a lot safer.
spirit_of_town_hall
I'd work in Iraq for 15 000 US tax free per month. The British hostage "Bagley" also has a Thai wife. Apparently he was scheduled to retire next month. STH
Old Hippie
I am looking at jobs now in that region, mainly Kuwait and Dubai. For me, the money and a break from the ordinary. My company is going down the toilet, I have endured countless paycuts and have lost my pension, so also a feeling of fast money needed now for the future, and if I get killed, hell, had no good future to look foreward to anyway...unless you consider working until I am 75+ and dropping dead on the toilet at work to be a future (one guy I was working with did this last night, still a bit weirded out by it). A lot of these guys seem to take chances, for a lot of guys, it beats working at home for $25,000 a year if they can get work. Some of those oil workers are pretty limited, skill wise, and would never have the life they want without the risk...can you imagine the shitty day to day meager existance a measly paycheck provides? and no hope of ever getting a holiday in LOS? Sucks, I'd rather take my chances...
