ATM fraud in Thailand

Maybe this will work. I have three accounts at my bank here in the states. In one account, I have a higher interest savings and the other one with no interest checking account. Since the ATM's in Thailand can only access my checking and lower interest savings account, just keep enough funds in the accounts that you can access at ATM. When I need more money, I simply go to my bank's website and transfer funds. My advise is don't keep too-mut in the account that you can access at the ATM. eee

Hi LHL,

>>>>While I d not deny there is sophisticated equipment and technology out there, I see no hard evidence that this is being used in LOS in the casual manner many describe here. If ANYONE can bring me hard evidence, or their own sworn testimony that they know these things from personal experience, I will be glad to introduce them to some senior police and banking officials that would take them most seriously.<<<<

I don't know about that, my friend. I think is a huge problem there, the more I look into it. My gf is not stupid. She does the payroll for Citibank in Singapore, and Hong kong, and has a BS degree in computer science. And her bank account is zero. It's not an urbon legend. It's very real. And is quite amazing how many of her co-workers have come out with similar stories.

Her bank account was broken into. She has no reason what-so-ever to bullshit me about this. I've known her far too long for her to have a need to play games with me. It happened exactly as she said it did. And *is* a real problem there.

>They make millions from this service and don't want to alarm the public and have the public see this as an unsafe way to get out their money. Very cost effective for the banks really, no people extra to hire in the bank, and easy money for them. Don't think they'll publicize this and kill their cash cow TTM.

That actually works other way around. The customers can complain in the media and the banks can not control that.

People moving from one bank to another due to unreliable and damaging ATM usage practices would kill the culprits pretty soon.

Anyone who moved away takes (or takes from someone else) a home loan, for example. 200K loan, that usually brings 750K to the bank is not what they want to lose.

If I heard that a hacker had broken into a bank's web site, that bank would be dead for me. If I happened to be a person in power within a corporate, banking with that bank, terrible for the bank.

This is very real and scary. As I said my brother lives up North and there are problems there, not only one bank but with Krung Thai, Bangkok banks. However, as I posted before, with filing complaints to the police my several people, problems have not occured for the past 2 years. It has got to be and inside job and many people involved.

Hi Jas,

Yea, but what really pisses me off, is the reaction to the problem. Both with the bank, and my tirak. Both seem to have this "mai pen rai" attitude to the whole thing. ::

My tirak says, "yes, but cannot do anything about". :banghead: And bank tells her the same thing. Hahahahha

WTF?????

God help the Bangkok Bank employee who just told me that my entire account had just been wiped out, and then tried to tell me "mai pen rai" :D

I would be on the front page of Bangkok Post, for sure. As well as the Washington D.C. papers, not to mention CNN. :D

"farang goes bezerk in BKK bank"

That's what is not happening other than in anegdotes.

Many possibilites have been explored in the thread. Hi-tech, low tech, down to stealing the PIN.

Could there be one more - that your gf simply and plainly lied to you?

No. Not an option. But why is so hard for you to consider ATM theft is a real possibility?

You don't think can happen? And are so secure in your belief that no one can do? It's time to wake up, my friend.
