Actually, I can't blame the Thais (or other countries) for collecting this tax themselves. Figure with the Airline industry in the shape it is in, and the idea of trusting them (airlines) to pay up, (or not pay up if bankrupt) then who could blame them (the Thais) for wanting full control over the money?

If Suvarnabhumi airport is making noises about increasing landing fees over Don Muang, then its natural to think that these fees will be passed along to the travelers in terms of higher ticket prices. That wuold be a "hidden" tax, but it would not be surprising to see the fees both increased, and if they master the trick, integrated into the ticket price as it is now done in U.S. airports, Japan, and Singapore, among very many. >snip

Again, landing fees are paid by the airline to the airport and are not part of the airport taxes on your ticket. Airport taxes are to cover the expenses to run the airport: clean toilets, security.

And yes, the cost of building Suvanabhumi will be passed onto you by the airport authorities (50 billion baht?)

I remember Montreal Dorval airport asking for an addional 10 can dol departure tax to "'embellish" that airport some years back....collected in the same way as at Dong Muang.

in USA and Europe airport tax is included for a long time in tickets; then Japan followed and just recently (2-3 years ago) China and Korea.

just few countries left where airport tax is collected from the passengers. a couple of third world countries and.....Thailand and the Philippines! or did somebody say that the latter two belong as well to this group?

Everybody wants to tax the "traveller" because they can not vote the B*TCHES/B*STARDS out of office.

Yep...is especially prevalent in the U.S. where cities place high "bed" taxes on hotel stays. Rented a car at Denver airport a few years back. Something like a $10/day surcharge. For what? For their fucking football stadium ! That's how they "sell" the concept of government building these palaces for professional entertainers to the local public. Don't worry about it: our valued visitors will pick up the tab. Assholes.

landing fees, parking fees, lightning fees, cleaning fees, push-back fees etc etc.

We tried to make a database of all possible fees at airports worldwide, but gave up: landing fees by type of plane, by weight of plane, by time of landing, by day of the week, by number of passengers etc etc.

Airport taxes are supposed to cover operation expense of the airport, and make a profit.

But surely the airlines pay this which in a roundabout sort of way gets included in our ticket price.

Add Canada to the list (at least that was the case a few years ago).

I guess by not including the taxes on the ticket price and having to collect it manually it gives an extra few Thais a job - money collector, the ticket-hole-puncher chick on the door etc.

Interestingly, New Zealand is another country where you still pay at the airport directly.

Japan, USA, Britain, Europe etc. etc. all paid for on the ticket with your airfare.
