The USA are a very rich and an extremely productive country. That your country for example was not able to rebuild New Orleans yet (or just clearing out the destroyed quarters) or give medicaid to all your fellow countrymen is ...

...By the way, China is happy to fill in in every country the West abandons - as long the country has raw materials or other stuff of interest.

FIrst point sort of hits it...how can we help someone else when we cannot help ourselves? if New Orleans was full of rich white people, and the land of no interest to developers (as in casinos) then it would have been rebuilt right away, and maybe by locals who need the jobs, NOT immigrant labor that works cheap, and does shit work.

As for China, yes, they are "helping us" fund this little war we are having, always glad to help.

As for helping Vs. sticking our nose in (sorry, I deleted that part), it comes down to if we are really helping or not...if we are going in for other than altruistic motives, then we should stay the fuck out right? and if we are going in to "help" then why not help at home as well? as for helping others so they don't come here and fuck it up...too late, we neglected Mexico (except for that NAFTA crap) and look where it got us...had we maybe kept the bulk of aid in this region, as in Mexico, Central America, maybe we'd not have the illegal problems, and maybe we wouldn't have pissed off so many people...

[color:red]"Now it looks like Fort Apache."[/color]

I have used this expression many times myself until I visited Fort Apache. Fort Apache always looked like a small village. No fortified walls. thats righ, no walls surrounding the fort. If you didn't know it was a fort, you would think it was a vilage.

Very few 19th century army posts in the west did have defensive walls. The forts in the old North West (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan etc) did have wooden stockades. For one thing, in the southwest you could see all around you. No forests to allow Injuns to sneak up on you.

We could all show up some Sunday at their Church and preach outside their church doors the teachings of Jesus. How he chased the prostitute Mary Madelein, how he got people drunk on wine, and how he was so chummy with his apostles, especially John. And we could greet each one of them with a holly kiss, especially the women.

The oldest, and probably only city in the USA that was behind a fortified wall was Tucson; about 80 years. It's fortification started as a spainish fort, and then epanded to enclose all the houses as the city grew.

What surprised the shit out of me was Fort Apache was in the mountains, surrounded by forest. Completely different then the stockade fort John Wayne would ride thru with the calvary in the movies.

The uniforms in those films were wrong, the weapons were wrong, the salute was wrong ... little unimportant things that Hollywood never much worried about.

Plus John Wayne in uniform was wrong. He "babied out" in WWII. Nice guy and all, but a combat shirker none the less. He was embarrassed by it later. At least he could have done a Reagan and had the Army assign him to a Hollywood film unit.

THE EMPOWER FOUNDATION is mentioned in this article and from what I know' date=' is an organization that does deserve support.

I've met several girls that have received job training and English courses provided free of charge at their Silom center. They also have a successful branch in Chaing Mai and have opened one in Pattaya.

They very specifically DO NOT proselytize nor denigrate the girls in any way for working in the sex industry, they just provide support with no judgments.

When the worldwide AIDS conference was held in Bangkok several years back they were initially invited to participate but when the government realized that their goal was to encourage government support for providing condoms and HIV advice to working girls, they were turned away for encouraging prostitution.

I've never seen a solicitation for funds on their part but they certainly are worthy of support.[/quote']

Dave,

I'll politely disagree. These people all have problems that need fixing in their own countries, and they should stay there, and fix those. Additionally, I maintain that ALL these groups have an ulterior motive, regardless of what they say, or how theycome across.

EMPOWER *is* fixing a problem in their own country. They are 100% Thai-formed and run (a Thai woman started it). Some of the volunteer teachers are farang, but all of the people who run it are Thai.
