Yet Another Risibly Facile Computer Query from Techno-Dunce Fiery Jack

Yes folks, it's time to make with that  face again. Board resident computer-illiterate techno-ignoramus :clown: Fiery Jack a-knocking again with another one of his mind-bogglingly inane queries that even a five-year-old could answer without pausing for thought. :)

Okay, to my dilemma (eventually). At home, I have an ancient (10 years old?) Mac G4 Cube. Its specifications are as follows:

Machine Model: Power Mac G4 Cube

CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)

Number Of CPUs: 1

CPU Speed: 450 MHz

L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB

Memory: 128 MB

Bus Speed: 100 MHz

I've got a La Cie external 500GB hard disk hooked up to it, on which I keep back up files and all my thousands of iTunes music files.

I also have a lap top that I hardly ever use, a 3-year-old iBook G4:

Machine Model: ibook G4

CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)

Number Of CPUs: 1

CPU Speed: 1.2GHz

L2 Cache (per CPU): 512KB

Memory: 256MB

Bus Speed: 133 MHz

My basic question is, would it make more sense for me to hook the lap top up to the La Cie and use it as my main computer i.e. would it be more powerful and quicker that the old G4 cube rig? Would there be any difference. The lap top has OSX 10.4.10 softwre installed with Office:mac 2004, the G4 cube has OSX 10.3.9, if that makes any difference.

Why am I thinking of making the switch

1. The G4 Cube has been really f*cking slow of late. :banghead: I get the feeling it's not long for this world â?? groaning and grinding, taking ages to open documents, and often freezes mid-download: music, or porn videos, more often: murder when you're all revved up for a good wank and you've got to unplug and restart the bastard while standing there with your trousers round your ankles. :relieved:

2. I'm changing apartments soon, so was thinking of throwing the hefty G4 Cube set up (monitor and all the wires) out.

3. But I don't want to buy a new computer yet because I get an allowance from work next April that I can use to buy an expensive new toy.

Cheers. Thanks in advance for help.

Jack,

Why not simply try it out, plug you HD into the powerbook, do a few of the same procedures you've done on the desktop, monitor your speed, see if it helps. I've just recently upgraded from a 3 1/2 yr old PB to a brand new iMac, and it flies.

Trying out should be simple, just swap a few plugs around. Mac's are usually quite forgiving in those things.
