I don't know about Bamrungrad. Hopefully, they're charging his family the local rate, but it certainly doesn't sound like it. Bamrungrad is known for double pricing. One former board member stopped going there when he realised it. Since he's a Chinese-American, at first he had been charged the Thai price. Then they realised he wasn't Thai and hit him for double what he'd been paying. (Board name was BeenThere.)

Sad story

but no medical cover (and I am talking about a premium) is suicidal.

Now of course if he was a 50K/month English teacher a premium is maybe a bit too much.....

If the family was not able to pay the bills?

They would probably not dump him in the street

(like in Africa) but would let him die in peace.

Yep true, however fo the bills there is something wrong.

my girlfriend had to undergo an urgent operation and I took her to bumrungrad, she stayed 1 day in ICU and 5 days more at the hospital (private room etc...) and the total bill was "only" 140K as she did not have yet a decent medical insurance.

So 100K/day??? Even taking into account brain surgeon and specialists.....

Your friend chose to work and live here with no medical cover and than goes to the most expensive medical establishment in Thailand in his time of need.

After falling off a building onto his head and damaging his brain, I don't think he actually chose the hospital himself, maybe the ambulance men decided where to take him.

The son of one of my Farang colleagues had an appendix almost burst. Papa rushed the kid to Ramathibodi Hopsital just in time. They operated almost immediately. Sonny was in a private room for at least 5 days. Since it was a government hospital, the cost to the papa was only 7,000 baht! The university picked up the rest.

This time last year my GF had her appendix burst & was rushed to PRARAM 9 hospital.

Stayed 7 days private room etc etc & cost approx 70000 baht

IMO the hospital was very professional in all areas of service.

Better than some of the western hospitals i've been to over the years.

Take care

Off a Building? I read the report and it stated "he plunged nearly five metres off his apartment buildingâ??s elevator shaft roof", hardly off a building. And as for ambulance men deciding where to take him, obviously you are showing your ignorance of A&E in Thailand with a comment like that.
