Words of Wisdom

CTO, SD, OH and others,

Gentlemen, please accept my apologies for not contacting you : I greatly appreciate the courtesy that each of you has extended to me via PT or in a thread. One problem is that I have an independent streak that says 'work it out for yourself'. The other problem is that I cant really accept everything that folk like our UT bar owner throw at me, and I think you will agree that even the more hardened LOS vets have disagreed long and loud on this board over time on various issues : we are not all same-same. Meeting each of you without a bit more experience of day-to-day life in Bangkok would not give me the perspective I need : short of taking notes and nodding sagely, I dont know what I could contribute.

I noticed something encouraging this morning - folks around the serviced apartments I moved into a few days ago recognise me and smile. Given that they dont (directly) benefit financially from me, their smiles seem especially genuine. These are the Thai people that I have been waiting to interact with - from the girls in the laundry who showed me how to start the machines, to the office girls in the lift on their way to work. True, I am living in Bangkok's equivalent of 'the Cross', and many of these people have seen me escorting working girls up to my apartment, but my untrained eye can detect no aloofness on anyone's part. I doubt that life in the Cross would be this bearable.

My musings aside, I do have to get my shit sorted before I spend any more baht. Given that most of you work during the week, I am going to suggest that Saturday night would be a good opportunity to get together - Gullivers, Down Under, Landmark, whatever - just let me know your preferences via PT and I will get my sorry arse to that location at the specified time.

I still believe that most Thais are genuinely nice people.

Just that it might fade fast with the deteriorating economy and social situation...

Actually GD, I think you took the right decision.

When I moved to Thailand for one year I went crazy but as I was on expat salary then it was not really a problem.

The second time I moved there, I did not go crazy as I was moving there just to be with the ex gf.

Diversity is so interesting or life would be boring.

Tonight's NG for me, out with Ms Vampirella. Then off to China til Saturday.

I suppose Sat nite could work. Up to Vampy tho', since I'll be away most of this month starting Tuesday and she takes priority.

BTW, GD, don't worry about "contributing" anything. The whole point of meeting is to have fun, not send you to school!

Cheers,

SD

True, but I suspect that each of you has something to impart that took more than a little skin off your own good selves. If you have lasted this long in the LOS without a few flesh wounds, I will be very surprised. Not much use telling me (or Drogon, or ..) if I just dont get it - with each passing day, more and more things are making sense to me, and some of the old posts have a lot more resonance than they did when I got off the plane 9 or 10 days ago. As one expat put it in the Udon Thani newsletter I picked up - 'Are we just old farts with young tarts, and is this the Land of Smiles or the Land of Illusion ?'. I cant speak for anywhere else in Thailand, but Suk Soi 4 to 33 feels like a complete illusion.

I'll PT each (or all if I can work it out :smirk: ) of you with my details - I cant hide out in cyberspace forever :grinyes:

Drogon, we all suffer, but the definition of insanity is repeating a pattern of behaviour and expecting a different outcome (or words to that effect). We're all crazy, and we all get grazed from time to time, but I'm hoping to be able to get back on the plane in 'x' months with as much of my skin intact as possible. Will post re 'Miss Bangkok' to give you an idea of where I'm at - this town, these people : as Bibblies put it, time for me to 'man-up'.

AF' date=' you should sit down with the Irish bar owner I met in Udon Thani a few days ago. I take 3 GTGs - agreed to show me what passes for 'nightlife' in UT post-bulldozers - into his bar, and he proceeds to tell me how it is, at least in his view. I can live with stuff like 'You can tell a Thai girl is lying when her lips are moving', but a tad embarrassing when the girls I bought in all had above-average English. GTG just listened to the whole lot, prompting him to warn me to 'watch out for her - she understands a lot more than she lets on'. Jesus, I hope you're right mate, but why settle down with a Thai woman in *Thailand* if the people upset you so much ? He didnt seem to be referring to the working girls in isolation, but I'm sure he hears more than his fair share of horror stories from the bar - I pointed out that he probably doesnt hear too many of the success stories - you dont stride into a bar and tell people that your wife of 10 years hasnt been back to the BJ bar since she met you.

For all the cynicism on the board, I am increasingly starting to see things the same way : at least for 90% of the working girls in BKK. This city seems to bring out the worst in so many Thais, and a lot of the Farang : just when you think you are getting a grip on it, some arsehole taxi driver drops you off at a massage parlour in the basement of 'your' hotel, then speeds off before you can say anything. Maybe Pattaya is a better bet, but I've challenged myself to put the next 3 months into trying to find out just how others survive this hellhole. :smirk: [/quote']

Relationships are a symbiotic affair. Two individuals can make it work.

No, it takes 2 to MAKE it work, only takes 1 to ruin it all. Relationships that turn serious quickly pass anything the least bit symbolic.
