I cant believe the US press did not just scream about this one! The term "Uncle Tom" was and is used to describe blacks who accepted the concept of white superiority. Maybe Obama's not as far to the left as some would have us believe if this magazine is attacking him.
rogueyam
The term "Uncle Tom" was and is used to describe blacks who accepted the concept of white superiority. The ultimate irony here is that despite the common perjorative sense of the sobriquet "Uncle Tom", the character by that name was in fact courageous, heroic, and superior to his tormentors. Tom encouraged his fellow slaves to escape. Then when the master demanded to know where they went Tom refused to tell, instead suffering a fatal beating to insure the success of the escape. In his dying throes, Tom forgave his captors their trespasses, as commanded by Jesus. Maudlin and melodramatic? Sure. Belittling? Not at all. Faustian
However, the Times is part of Murdochs group of media companies (news corporation)...Murdoch is the owner of Fox news...and a big friend of the republicans... More on Fox...read and be horrified... http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1067 Murdoch making contributions to the republican cause again... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/09/rupert-murdoch-donates-28_n_106165.html An amusing take by the slate (neo-con heaven), it seems their view is Murdoch has dropped them, whilst he gives money to them...hilarious....these republicans really are transparent and incredibly stupid...it's almost like they are trying to shame him... http://www.slate.com/id/2175511/ Yeah I know I've gone off topic...just wanted to open the debate up. Barak is not 'left' by european standards. I'm not aware of any US politician being particularly 'left'. Pretty horrific stuff using the racial card 'for fun'...some lame brained idiot being provocative...well done, must have taken serious brain power to come up with that...why does race have to be so important to people? People are people. Some are adept, some are idiots. I'm getting really bored with this crap now.
..
And speaking of Fox's crap, how's this for some ultimate racist disrespect for a potential First Lady? They may as well just call her a "nappy-headded ho'." Oh...that one's been done, has it? Regards, SD -- Is it okay to start calling McCain's wife his "Stoned Sugar Mama" now?
