High blood pressure/hypertension

Are any board members taking medication for high blood pressure (specifically Type II hypertension)?

At age 35 I've just been diagnosed with Type II hypertension and have an average BP reading of about 190/115, which is some scary shit. I've been told to lose weight *now* and will soon begin taking medication, and I'm eager to learn of first-hand accounts of the possible side effects of various BP medications, such as vasodilators, Beta-blockers, and diuretics.

(I'm not a Viagra/Cialis user, so interaction with those can be ruled out.)

Timely post, CDN - went to Bumrungrad yesterday with back problem and was told that my BP was high - they check it as a matter of course. About 2 years since last check, and everything was fine then (I'm 49) but I have absolutely caned myself for the last 6 weeks since the plane touched down at Subarnawhatsit : fried food, gallons of alcohol and little exercise. When the nurse told me I had high BP, all I could think about was how little this concerned me compared to the hangover which threatened to kill me then and there.

A red flag for sure, and I'll be doing some research to see how quickly I can get this under control. Good luck with your BP - I suspect that this is a problem for many board members, but its easy to say "I'll exercise more and eat less" : much harder to follow through. At your age, you have every chance of dealing with this before it gets worse.

Cheers,

side effects of vasodilators, Beta-blockers, and diuretics,

I take all three, the vasodilator (ramiprill) other than a ringing in my ears, it doesn't appear to have any side effects on me. The Beta-blocker (atenolol) tends to make me a bit lethargic, but no other noticable problems. Diuretics (furosemide)produces the most problems for me, apart from the obvious, runing to the toilet every 20 mins for a couple of hours after taking them, they induce night cramps and have also caused attacks of gout in my feet, gout HURTS, and no 'over the counter' pain killers have any effect

My mother (80 yo) suffers from high blood pressure but everything she has been prescribed reacts badly with her / makes her feel ill. So she told the doctor she'd rather have the hbp and die sooner than live longer and feel ill all the time.

Sorry, just a related story about my mothers hbp and so not really any help to the OP.

I have High blood pressure as well, when I dropped substantial weight, it went lower. I tore up my knee, gained weight, it went up, lost weight, down, tore knee again, laid up 10 months with recovery, regained it, it went up...see the pattern?

I currently take Proprananoyl (sp) (generic Inderol) and it helps, need to drop weight again. Heel spurs not helping.

Thank you all for the replies.

Height/weight: 168cm/110kg. I'm a fat man and have ignored the problem for years, but this health scare is the push for me to get my ass in gear and lose some bloody weight.

A complete lifestyle change is unrealistic, as there are parts of life that are just too enjoyable (certain foods, booze, etc.)...so I'll have to begin to ration out my vice-taking in a more realistic and responsible way.

It'll be a slow change, beginning with diet and cutting down the booze, and then a slow introduction of increasing levels of exercise.

Cheers to all,

CDN
