Mentors Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Share Posted August 22, 2008 (BangkokPost.com) - Flyweight boxer Somjit Jongjohor defeated Vicenzo Picardi of Italy 7-1 in the semi-final bout in the Olympics on Friday, clearing him the way to fight for the gold. Somjit had beaten the Italian boxer before in the semi-finals at last year's World Championships. He earlier told reporters that he was confident in this fight. "I am very confident that I will beat him again but I will not take anything for granted," said the Buri Ram star, who was runner-up at the 2007 worlds, a day before the bout. Somjit defeated Eddie Valenzuela of Guatemala, Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan and Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan in the previous rounds. Sotolongo was the 2008 Pan-American champion. Manus defeated Masatsugu Kawachi of Japan 8-1 in the round of 16 and outpointed Sapiyev 7-5 on his way to the semi-finals.
