(BangkokPost.com) - Flyweight boxer Somjit Jongjohor defeated Vicenzo Picardi of Italy 7-1 in the semi-final bout in the Olympics on Friday, clearing him the way to fight for the gold.

Somjit had beaten the Italian boxer before in the semi-finals at last year's World Championships. He earlier told reporters that he was confident in this fight.

"I am very confident that I will beat him again but I will not take anything for granted," said the Buri Ram star, who was runner-up at the 2007 worlds, a day before the bout.

Somjit defeated Eddie Valenzuela of Guatemala, Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan and Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan in the previous rounds.

He will have to fight Laffita Hernandez of Cuba on Saturday night in the final bout.
