BRIT TEACHER ALLEGEDLY RAPED ON SAMUI BY TAXI-DRIVER

Monday 28 September, 2009 [PDN]: A 28-year-old British female teacher was allegedly brutally raped by a taxi driver and robbed by his accomplice on Koh Samui early in the morning of September 26; the latest such incident on this paradise island. The culprit has been arrested, but his brother, who disputes the evidence, has threatened a legal case if the alleged facts are proved to be wrong.

After a night out on Chawang Beach with friends, the alleged victim, an English language teacher going under the pseudonym of Lily, called a taxi to take her back to her lodgings on Lamai Beach, early in the morning of Saturday, September 26. The woman who was apparently really drunk was chatting to the taxi-driver, identified as Chokchai Sompong, as they drove towards her home. However, when they reached her lodgings, instead of stopping, the man drove past and allegedly took her to a house on a coconut plantation, where he is accused of raping her.

Deputy Police Commander Paiboon Krajakchan of Koh Samui Police maintains 'He dragged her out of the car against her will and beat her (up) in the process. He then raped her in the house.' According to some reports, the woman was reportedly dragged screaming out of the taxi, prior to being taken into the house. After the alleged incident, another Thai, the friend of the 21-year-old taxi-driver, arrived on the scene and the two transferred the victim, who by this time was apparently semi-conscious, from the house to the friend’s pickup, according to police. They drove on for a short distance and dumped her by the roadside, near Lamai Beach. The taxi-driver’s friend is then alleged to have robbed the victim of Bt1,700, all she had in her possession. The victim was then allegedly left to find her own way home.

Presumably, the victim reported the incident to police later in the day on September 26 and the taxi-driver was duly arrested. His accomplice is also being questioned by police. The taxi-driver, however, denies the offence, but tests currently being conducted on him will no doubt ascertain if he was, indeed, a rapist. However, these tests are expected to take between 2-3 days. The taxi-driver’s brother, who supports his brother’s innocence, said his brother has been driving a taxicab on Koh Samui for more than 5 years with no previous problems. He said he does not believe that his brother is a troublemaker and that if a case cannot be categorically proved against him, he will resort to the law to “protect the dignity of all related to the family.â€Â

Deputy Police Commander Paiboon Krajakchan, nevertheless said: 'We are treating this matter seriously. It is important that Koh Samui is seen as a safe destination for tourists.'

A number of previous incidents have occurred on Koh Samui, notably on the same beach that the present incident is alleged to have happened, on or near, Lamai Beach, when two fisherman and raped and murdered Brit tourist, Katherine Horton, on New Year's Day ,2006, later describing her as 'fun and delicious'. Thailand has recently been targeted by the UK media as a dangerous tourist destination and a series of videos have been posted on YouTube.
