First Transgender Presidential Appointee Fears Being Labeled 'Token'

For Amanda Simpson, believed to be America's first openly transgender presidential appointee, the job "she" starts Tuesday in the U.S. Commerce Department is an honor and the culmination of a career dedicated to understanding military technology.

But what gnaws at her, she says, is the fear of being labeled a token who was hired because of her sexual identity rather than on her merits.

[color:red]"Being the first sucks," she told ABC News.com.[/color] :surprised:

"I'd rather not be the first but someone has to be first, or among the first. I think I'm experienced and very well qualified to deal with anything that might show up because I've broken barriers at lots of other places and I always win people over with who I am and what I can do."

Simpson has been named senior technical adviser in the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security, a job in which she will monitor the exports of U.S. weapons technology.

She has 30 years in the industry but can't escape the feeling that some will see her appointment as a political maneuver.

"[There will be] questions like: Is this a token? Are you here to do a job or just to fill a quota or appease other people? In that regard it makes it a bit more difficult," she said. "I'm sure I will have to do and intend to do a far superior job than any other person. But I'm sure I will always be second guessed."

President Obama has walked a fine line when dealing with members of the gay and transgender community. He was widely supported by gay voters in 2008, but has since come under criticism from many of those same proponents for not acting fast or hard enough to expand their rights, in their view. Obama opposes gay marriage and has made only vague commitments to ending the military's ban on openly gay service members, aka "don't ask, don't tell."

A helluva lot more you don't really want to read ...

at least she actually has some successful experience at the kind of job she is taking (which we couldn't say about the previous president's appointments)...unless she used to work with the other ladyboy pickpocketers after midnight outside the Westin, I couldn't care less about her gender or genders.

Agree that she seems to have some relevant experience. Certainly more that Panetta as Director of the CIA. OMG !

BTW, ItsMe...seems like Obama has forgotten his over-the-top promise that health care reform discussions/crafting would be transparent, open to the public to see and comment upon...and would even be on C-Span. (one such claim was played on several news channels yesterday). What happened to that? Just another backhoe bucket of bullshit I was talking about before the election. Where is Lee Harvey Oswald when the country really needs him?

Those kind of thoughts are the reason why the USA almost probably will never really recover from the troubles of the 1990s.

You Americans lost the will to work together for your country and even prefer for ideological reasons that the country go down even deeper.

I've been echoing the same thoughts kamui. We simply lack the collective will or leadership to get out of the messes we are in.

I have not been presented with ANY compelling evidence that we will work it out either. BOTH parties are about their own power and not the country or the constitution. If they do anything in the best interests of the country its only as a consequence of acting in their self interest. I really believe that. Given full control of all branches, the whole congress, etc. I really don't think the Republicans would do much that resembles what they say they are about and the same for the Dems. The Republicans did have all 3 branches for a while and acted antithesis to what they claim they are about. It soured me completely on the party for now. Until I see them walking the talk. I was never a big fan of Dems but are a 'lesser of two evils' proposition for me.
