They have shown concern in recent years only because they still needed the U.S. and world approval for things like hosting the Olympics, etc. Eventually they'll have the power where they'll feel no need to coddle anyone. A Vietnamese colleague told me as kids they would why parents (north and south) had fought fighting each other so viciously. After the US took the Philippines as spoils of the Spanish-American War, the US proclaimed them a "commonwealth" - not a colony - and set a date for independence (decades in the future).
