Hugh_Hoy
Not sure if this is true but heard mentioned that the quake was that powerful and the shift in the tectonic plates were that severe it threw the earth off its axis point by at least 8 centimeters. To me that sounds pretty powerful but anyone want to have a guess at what that means to the average joe... Flashermac
Radiation levels rise above limit at quake-hit plant: Kyodo (Reuters) - Radiation levels have risen above the safety limit around Tokyo Electric Power Co's (TEPCO) nuclear plant hit by a massive earthquake and the company has informed the government of an "emergency situation," Kyodo agency reported on Sunday. It did not mean an immediate threat to human health, the company said. The company said earlier that it had started releasing steam from a reactor at the plant. A similar rise in radiation levels occurred after the company released radioactive steam from another reactor to let go of pressure. Then again the company was obliged to inform the government of an "emergency situation." (Reporting by Chisa Fujioka) Link
Flashermac
Quake moved Japan coast 8 feet, shifted Earth's axis (CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis. "At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters). The temblor, which struck Friday afternoon near the east coast of Japan, killed hundreds of people, caused the formation of 30-foot walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys. Some waves reached six miles (10 kilometers) inland in Miyagi Prefecture on Japan's east coast. ... Link
Flashermac
Japan quake: Toll may cross 10,000 in Miyagi alone TOKYO: The toll from a magnitude-8.9 earthquake in Japan could exceed 10,000 in the hardest-hit prefecture of Miyagi alone, police said on Sunday, as other officials tried to reassure the public that reactors at two damaged nuclear power plants posed no immediate danger. "I have no doubt" that the death toll would rise above 10,000 in the prefecture, public broadcaster NHK quoted police chief Takeuchi Naoto as saying. ... A municipal official in Futaba town in Fukushima prefecture told Kyodo that about 90 percent of the houses in three coastal communities had been washed away by the tsunami. ... cavanami
There were thousands of Japanese that protested and clearly did not want the nukes to be built in Japan. This mess is far from over, IMO.
Flashermac
I was just thinking that no one is going to want nuclear power plants after this. Time to look into wind power? Wave power? Big wind up springs?
Hugh_Hoy
Wave power! OMG. That tsunami could've produced enough fai for the whole country for a week !
