Hugh_Hoy Posted March 13, 2011 Report Share Posted March 13, 2011 Not sure if this is true but heard mentioned that the quake was that powerful and the shift in the tectonic plates were that severe it threw the earth off its axis point by at least 8 centimeters. To me that sounds pretty powerful but anyone want to have a guess at what that means to the average joe... Flashermac Posted March 13, 2011 Report Share Posted March 13, 2011 Radiation levels rise above limit at quake-hit plant: Kyodo (Reuters) - Radiation levels have risen above the safety limit around Tokyo Electric Power Co's (TEPCO) nuclear plant hit by a massive earthquake and the company has informed the government of an "emergency situation," Kyodo agency reported on Sunday. It did not mean an immediate threat to human health, the company said. The company said earlier that it had started releasing steam from a reactor at the plant. A similar rise in radiation levels occurred after the company released radioactive steam from another reactor to let go of pressure. "At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters). The temblor, which struck Friday afternoon near the east coast of Japan, killed hundreds of people, caused the formation of 30-foot walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys.
