Flashermac
I would say that religion does evolve. That is what's happening right now. It is playing far less of a part of peoples lives these days (at least in the west) than in previous generations, but it is not really disappearing. Surveys always show that a large majority still believe in divinity, if not in any particular religion. People simply do not feel a need to go attend church regularly and make a show of their beliefs any more. A few generations ago people didn't have much else to do except go to church to socialise or pass the time. They went 2 or 3 times a week. But there are far more ways to spend one's time now - TV, the internet, travelling with ease anywhere in the world. Fraternal organisations also have fewer members - the Elks, the Moose, the Mystic Knights of the Sea, the American Legion. That doesn't mean that people are becoming anti-social. dave32
Well, if they're evolving -- they need to hurry it up a little bit.
Steve
Maybe there is but is there any empirical data that suggest no religion would mean a safer world?
khunsanuk
Hi, Is there any that suggests the opposite? I mean, besides the crusades, the inquisition, the terrorism in name of Allah, etc etc. Sanuk!
Coss
We'll never have a safe world, since Robert Ardrey dug up an Austrolopithecus Australis skull, with an antelope femur embedded in it, we have known that man, and his precursors, have a predilection to violence. Despite what people believe about us being born pure
Flashermac
The communists preached atheism, but they did a pretty job of killing people in the name of Marxism. If people have no religion, they seem to find a subsitute. e.g. Marx called religion the "opiate of the masses", saying the churches taught them to accept their fate with the promise of a better life to come. The atheist Marxists, on the other hand, promised a better life for your children or grandchildren; in the mean time, you should shut up and do what the party told you. Is their a difference? There will always be "true believers" in something.

Flashermac
Examples please (excluding Islam, which is the most violent and reactionary religion of all).
