Thanks for the feedback whch is very welcome. the point you make is totally valid.... There is mroe than an element of hypocracy in this week's column and I will admit that. The opening piece is how *I* feel. What follows later is news...for the benefit of those who want to know what is going on. As hypocritical as it sounds, the news is necessaary, even though it is totally contradictory to my personal belief that the industry is largely bad news.

I received an email from a prominent board member saying that basically, I was alientaing readers with my negativity about the industry. So be it. This is how I feel. What's more, Nanaplaza.com is not that representative of the readership to my site, although it does seem a fair few people from here read my nonsense weekly ramblings.

Again, thanks for the feedback which is welcome as it is nice to know what people really think - good or bad.

Yea Stick, its the old "been here too long" malaise set in, for me the the go go scene just seems so fucking boring. I occasionaly enjoy the company of pay for play girls, but only socially. I don't do take aways because its just a "unloading the bag" shag, I imagine like telephone sex, mostly very unfulfilling. Even at my advanced age I enjoy my bit on the side but that is with one regular girl who I have a real realationship with, she accepts her minority status and I enjoy a ongoing relationship with her and the sex seems mutually benificial. Welcome to the club, I expect very soon I will run into YOU in Pratunam with a Baby strapped to your front.

You asked for feedback...

Your opening piece is about why you think bargirls should work outside Thailand.

You say I'm totally against the idea of organized prostitution

First your comments about poor Isaan girls

The sector that targets farangs will continue, because the girls who work in this sector, predominantly from the Isaan region, really have no other options. There is very little work about for them... Prostitution provides them with but temporary relief... They simply do not make enough money to make any real difference in their life ... As far as employment opportunities go in Thailand, yes, there are many alternatives, but let's face it, they pay miserably.

Do they really have no other options ? Do all Isaan girls work in gogo bars ? Or is it only the cute ones (sometimes I think it's only the ugly ones) ?

They don't make enough money ? Remind me of the average salary in Bangkok, or for a university graduate.

In your description of girls working abroad you use Australia as your example. I have no experience of this, but learned a little about the system in Britain (see my post on the "Thai Women Trafficked into Debt Bondage in Japan" thread in this section).

First, they generally get in through highly organised means.

Organised Crime

Following this money is needed for the ticket, which again is paid by the organisers, and in most instances someone will escort them on the flight and through immigration at the other end. Remember, these are rural girls with a modest education who have most likely never been on a plane before, almost certainly never travelled abroad before and insome cases, might not be able to even read or write Thai, let alone English!

Change "organisers" to "traffickers". "Rural girls" = naive and ripe for exploitation.

At this point the cost has already amounted to around $Aust. 2,000... once she has paid back what she owes, which could be in the realm of $15k to $40k ($25K seems to be standard), depending upon how greedy the operators are,

So now people traffickers organising indentured (TM Flyonzewall) prostitution are just "greedy operators" ?

Word on the street is that there are about 30 odd places in Sydney that would take girls like this but only about 10 or so who would have the $$ to take her on outright.

Maybe you mean to buy her "contract".

Back to the first situation where the establishment basically owns the girl, issues arise if she isn't in demand. What can happen is that the establishment sells her off to another establishment for a new price, inevitably higher than what they paid for her e.g. if they paid $20k they may try and get $40k from the next establishment and of course, she is expected to pay that $40k off!

In fact you mean to buy (and sell) her.

Obviously this was following her, shall we call it, probation period.

I can handle the concept of people making money from the misery of others, but I would hope that they would at least have the moral courage to name it for what it is.

You wrote, I'm totally against the idea of organized prostitution

In my opinion, you have no credibility on the subject of Thai prostitution of either the local or export variety, but I'd be happy to listen to any views - from yourself or others - for or against.

Hi,

"The opening piece is how *I* feel."

And you have every right to feel so, but....

How can you justify running a website promoting prostitution and even profiting from it financially (DollHouse banner?)?

If you feel this strongly, shouldn't you consider killing the site (don't worry I'll take good care of your visitors smile.gif ), or at the very least remove the parts on prostitution?

"the news is necessaary"

Yes, it is. It is what keeps people reading the column, it is I would guess not, no longer, your editorials.

But how will you be able to get this news in the future, since you think the industry is bad news and I therefore conclude that you will not be out as much as before.

Would you start doing a Trink and just waiting for second hand info by email?

"What's more, Nanaplaza.com is not that representative of the readership to my site"

Isn't it? No offence, Stickman, but I think this may be wishful thinking, since what is a typical Nanaplaza.Com reader? We have the entire gamut here, from newbies researching their first trip fully planning on indulging as often as possible, to 20+ year expats who have long ago lost interest in any form of nightlife.

Furthermore, "a fair few people from here" would fairly likely mean a rather substantial percentage of the people reading your column.

People's opinions change over time, I know mine have and I don't see the nightlife scene in the same light I used to, but just because it isn't as good as you once thought it was, does not mean it is necessarily evil.

Harsh words from me, I know, but I hope you can appreciate why they were said. We have been friends a long time, and while your site is in direct competetion with mine, I as a person would hate to see it go downhill / disappear. And I am afraid that that is where it is headed.

Anyway, follow what is in your heart / mind.

Sanuk!

I never met Stick, but it seems to me that he is going forward having some kind of catharsis where he will no longer stand the contradiction in his private life vs "public" life as a field covering author, and will change his act (life?) accordingly. I praise him for thinking out loud and do what worthy men do all thru their life: change.
