Phuket “Sandbox” traveller infected with Covid-19, tour group now in quarantine

A man who arrived in Thailand under the Phuket “Sandbox” reopening scheme has tested positive for Covid-19. The man is the first so-called “Sandboxer” to test positive for the virus since the island’s reopening last week under the scheme which allows travellers from overseas, who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, to enter the island province without undergoing quarantine. A Covid-19 test is required both before departure and upon arrival.

The traveller from the United Arab Emirates arrived yesterday and had a routine swab test done upon arrival at the Phuket International Airport before going to his hotel, according to Phuket Narong Woonciew, who announced the new infection today. The man was travelling in a tour group.

Late last night, between 10pm and 11pm, the test results came out positive for Covid-19. The man was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment while the others travelling in the same tour group are now in quarantine for the next 14 days. It’s unclear how many tourists are now in quarantine. The Bangkok Post says the travellers are in quarantine “at a hotel provided by the province for observation and Covid-19 testing,” but did not give specific details.

Since the “Sandbox” reopening on July 1, a total of 2,113 people from overseas arrived. The similar “Samui Plus” reopening scheme, involving the trio of islands of the Surat Thani, is planned to start on July 15.

Domestic air traffic between BKK and the Phuket sandbox shall exercise a sudden death on July 21st due to something having been declared Red Zone. No good. Unless many people got their vaccination every possible plan remains pure phantasy, which includes all other countries on earth.

- Wear a mask

- Wash your hands

- Avoid people

- Do not fart noisily in public

People travelling into the kingdom these days must either have a very very good reson or a tendency towards masochism. Apart from the known current obstacles there is always a fair chance for further local restrictions. And on arrival back home in your beloved home country another 14 days might appear on the menue. Coming back from Portugal 3 weeks ago our government had just declared it a high risk country involving 14 days quarantine, vaccinated or not. Travelling by car I would of course have given them a proper story but by plane no good.

A flareup in coronavirus cases in Phuket, the country’s first tourism hotspot to waive quarantine for vaccinated foreign visitors, is threatening to scuttle the experiment seen as a model for other tourism-reliant nations to reopen borders.

The resort island reported 125 new Covid-19 cases during the week ending July 27, higher than the government-set threshold of 90 weekly cases that could trigger a temporary suspension of the program. In response, local authorities closed public schools and shopping malls and banned gatherings of more than 100 people from Tuesday to stem the virus from spreading further.

Wasn't this obviously going to occur.

The sandbox can not bring in the million tourists. Too many hoops to jump through for a 1 or 2 week holiday. The threat of being sent to an ASQ hotel at an additional $2K USD, as a close contact, is ever present. Plus the possible 2 week isolation on returning home means very few will take the risk.
