It's just so damned hard to get them to talk about stuff interesting!

Usually interesting stuff depends on what culture, education, background you are from along with personal tastes. Do you talk to your GF about topics that she considers ineresting and then extrapolate tht into other topics that may pique her interests? Many people find art, history, politics and economics boring stuff. They would rather talk about movies, gossip, scandal and their friends/families.

You mentioned your girlfriend only reading cartoons. Have you taught her to read something aside from that? I myself had to be taught to read a newspaper by my parents and when I was older the Wall St Journal, The Economist and other publications by peers, teachers and mentors.

I had a Thai lass who never read a newspaper in her 21 years of life. She had a high school education but she only read the anime books. Everyday I read at least 2 international and one domestic newspaper in Thailand. I made it her responsibility to go and buy my daily newspapers along with 2 Thai language newspapers for her(one nonsense and one serious paper). I explained to her she needed to read them for various reasons. She was amazed at what she could learn from newpapers from gossip to employment opportunities and what her government was doing. No one had ever given her a reason to read a newspaper and she had never had an example of a person reading a daily paper in her life. Ever since that day she has never bought an anime book. She found them to be boring.

I remember a smile was bought to my face one day when I popped over to her room and she was sittting on the floor surrounded by newspapers and reading them along with another girl. She told me the other girl started reading them with her because she wanted to know why my friend read dailies. Knowledge is infectious.

Knowledge is infectious.

let's hope so.

My GF is one of the most stubborn person I know (after me, that is ::). It's not only me, I've had more than a few friends encourage her too. The funny thing is, she is quite serious that her daughter gets good grades in school, and is very attentive to her progress. Which to me proves the point that the girls know that education is a good thing.

I think she has resentment against her parents, because she wanted to join an army school, and they could not afford it. Seems the disappointment (and others i do not need to get into) broke her confidence in herself. Always hard for someone who meets her 10 years after to backtrack and burst the bubble. Or as the WHO sing: smash the mirror!

But i have not given up on her (see first parentheses).

Yes, when education is valued that much in Thailand it can be a tough setback what happened to your gf. My ex has always regretted not being able to get a higher education, it wasn't that easy when she grew up in a poor village. She reads a lot in Thai though, books, magazines and newspapers. A lot of religious stuff.

I've also got a friend who is very into literature, and has that "not Thai at all" good sense of humour when she writes. But again, you have to master a second language pretty well to express a good sense of humour..

Keep up the good work with her P127, and she might start to read more!

Cheers!

Hi,

[color:"red"] asked my GF about Mae Pho Sop (rice goddess), showed the name in thai, she was clueless.

For sure, I'd love to learn more from the old folks, before they die.

One question for you: given your good thai, i am sure it's damned rewarding, but what you learn, isn't it more about the inner workings of thai society and individuals + social psychology, more than greek tragedy and where is Eritrea?

Many old folks have valuable knowledge, I, like you, love to talk to them.

Well, if she is cluless on that subject, it just means that she was not reading or is not interested in learning from all sources available, especially from middle Thailand. I find the Isaan people very intelligent if they just have opportunities and interest.

In Isaan, there is a ceremony to pay respect to the Rice Goddess but the name is different, I bet if you probe more she will recognize the name.

Keep on encouraging her P127, she will turn around, you will see.

Cheers!

[color:"red"]Showed a BG a world map to expain where I live. She could not even point out North America! And I could see that she could not care less. That one episode explained alot to me about the BG world. Bigfun

I posted about the maps and the Thai women mentioned before. Most of these women have low education, average 6 yrs. of school and during those years they were never taught how to read maps. It isn't their fault, however, they should try to learn but spending time scheming to get good customers may be exhuasting them already.

I think the Thais who graduate from colleges and don't know where North America is should be the ones need to re-evaluate their education. For the BG or many Thais with low education, it is not their doings, giving opportunities and the will to learn, these people are very intelligent.

Mind you , I am not from Isaan but I find them very likeble and intelligent. ::

But that is what is expected I suppose. What I mean is this. Showed a BG a world map to expain where I live. She could not even point out North America! And I could see that she could not care less. That one episode explained alot to me about the BG world. Bigfun "
