.....then one could construe every act of kindness, politeness, tolerance and etiquette as PC!

Hi jj,

I agree with your line of argument on this one. It is just plain wrong to say that words are irrelevant.

I thought of an example that I hope is not against Board rules. Take the words Nigger and Black Man. Both mean the same thing, but one is generally acceptable and the other is offensive.

Using the term bargirl is not an attempt to hide what their line of work is. I would never use it to describe the waitresses at The Londoner, for example. It is just a more polite and positive sounding description for people who, let's face it, we mostly like and have a good time with.

Thanks...that's the kind of stuff I was thinking of. But 'Lady of the Night' seems stolen from an english movie ??? Knew another that refers to herself as a 'flower of love' ..... guess she likes butterflies. ::

Isn't language a wonderful thing? You say I "appear" to discount context and emphasis, yet you don't make the statement with conviction. I guess because it is evident that I don't discount these things if you read my numerous posts in this thread.

So you say "I am going whoring tonight fellas!". Certainly you are not using the term "whore" in the same manner or context as you tell a woman to her face she is a whore now is it? Certainly not the same context or emphasis as you asking a fella is his companion a "whore" now is it? I would certainly have no problem asking a guy if his companion is an escort, working girl or as they say in Rio "your company for the evening". I also wouldn't expect a guy to get upset to the point of having a physical altercation if I used those terms.

"Whore" simply put is a VULGAR word. I never said that it could not or should not be used but to spout this nonsense that it is neutral in meaning and completely fungible with all other terms that refer to prostitution is pure nonsense and you know it. I know what the word "whore" means and the meaning is deeper than simply someone who exchanges money for sex acts.Don't chide me fella!

Those who like to use such negative vulgarities when referring to women that they interact with are free to do so. I choose not to do so and I have no problems with those that do. Just don't expecct me to accept that negative vulgar words are meaningless and have no personal reflection upon those in which they are referenced to.

The girls are whores.

Very well then..

A lot of people (posters here) will believe there's a certain lack of respect from your part towards these girls when reading the above.

And you don't seem to be bothered by this fact, which makes me assume that there is indeed very little respect present. Then I'd like to know why exactly?

If you do tell me that you fully respect them (or have no disrespect whatsoever) then I'm at total loss as to why you couldn't care less about giving people a complete wrong picture about yourself, regarding shown respect towards bargirls.

Can anymore really be said on this subject? At the risk of getting flamed :onfire: :onfire: :onfire: this post is kind of whack and seems like almost a waste of time. We all know the word whore is meant with disrespect. The word sounds good when I am singing along with The Mentors and clowning around but does not seem to apply to most of the young ladies I slept with in Thailand for $$ money $$.

Any native english speaker with a reasonable vocabulary would know the word whore can only ever be interpreted as a term used in a calculated negative / derogatory manner. :(:applause:

I agree and would think that most Thais whether or not in the nightlife scene, would interpret whore as being a negative/derogatory word, if there is an equivalent in the Thai language.

Common sense tells me its not something I would say to a Thai, even if I could speak the language.

Where I come from, a whore is a lady who freely sleeps around, and is sexually active with numerous partners for free. A prostitute is a lady who sells her body for money, or drugs, or anything else.

While I guess you could call a prostitute a whore, you cannot correctly call a whore a prostitute, unless she accepts payment for her services. A whore sleeps around for the fun of it. A prostitute does so for a living. At least where I come from, that is the definition between the two.
