Chlamydia treatment (just how shit is the NHS?)

I contracted Chlamydia (so it seems) from a girl from Marine Disco in Pattaya, had to wait 3 days to get an appointment with a doctor in the GUM clinic in the UK. at the time there was painful feeling when urinating and generally at the end of my knob. also some clear discharge. this was all about 10 days after the unprotected sex. i guessed right away that this was chlamydia. doctor asked some questions (didn't take a look) and sent me to a nurse who took some swabs and a urine sample, said there was no evidence of anything and told me come back in ONE WEEK! few days later i was in serious pain and went to an emergency doctor who prescribed ciprofloxacin even though research shows this is ineffective against chlamydia and shouldnt be prescribed to patients who picked up an infection in se asia. so a few days later i go back to the GUM clinic and they say oh good news you have no infection. by this time the pain has spread to my bladder and testicles and deep inside my urethra, so doc sends me for another swab and still doesnt find evidence of anything but says because there's some pus i diagnose you with NSU (non specific urethritis). i ask what that is and he says its interchangable with chlamydia. so he prescribes me doxycycline for one week. havent been taking it for long enough to know if its worked.

i am really fucking angry about the shabby way i've been treated. why send me away for one week knowing ive got an infection? why not just prescribe me azithromycin which you only have to take once and is more effective against both chlamydia and gonnorhea? why stick cocktail sticks down my already painful knob when it is obvious i have either chlamydia or gonnorhea? (doc doesnt rule out that i have drug resitance gonorrhea) i'm worried that what started as a very minor infection has now caused serious damage (eg to my fertility). does anyone else agree that the treatment i've received has been a complete discrace or have other people had similar experiences?

the use of cipro is controversial, many doctors in Thailand use it

azithromycin is a lot more expensive then doxy (a week might be too short)

they tried to get a diagnosis which is not a bad thing - to send you home for a week doesn't sound so good, though

after all you have to remember that you cannot compare the NHS (after Thatcher) with the kind of medical care you get in rich western countries

I agree, doxy for one week probably is ineffective. Some use this drug with a large initial dosage and then follow thru with a regular dosage for 2 weeks.

Check the web for treatment. Sounds liked you got 'double fucked'.

Keep us posted of the final out come.

Unfortunately you can't just walk into a pharmacy and ask for the drug you want in this country so I'm going to have to stick with the doxycycline. I've been taking it for 2 days now and the symptoms are still getting worse. Feels like my bladder is about to explode and my scrotum has gone bright red which I've found out means the infection has spread to the testicles where real damage starts. The incompetent little shits at the NHS have really fucked me up. Think I might go to a private hospital on Monday or maybe just go to my local GP and demand I'm given Zithromax.

Thanks for the support.

I would jump on this toot sweet, don't wait till monday, real damage can start with onset. Permanant damage can be sterility, or impotance, get moving, and let us know what happens! As of now, I would not just go and demad Zithro, I would see a specialist, as it seems to be advancing despite the other antibiotics!

Zithromax is probably a better way to go. I think it is usually a 3-5 day course...

You can do better. A large dose of azithromycin (Zithromax) should take care of his problem in less than 12 hours. Buy two boxes of six 250mg tabs each. On an empty stomach, take 8 tabs all at once. To be on the safe side take the last two tabs the following day. Worked for me, use at your own risk.

The problem with self treatment is you may treat one problem but ignore or not 'see' the other problems.

I know of a clever falang who got the clap, self treated himself without any problems. Why I am telling this story is that he also treated his girl friend and she never did find out she had the clap and he also treated her without her finding out about it. How the hell did he do that?

this was all about 10 days after the unprotected sex

Hi Wonderlust,

I sincerely hope you get better, but if you're gonna have unprotected sex and you contract an STD, there's really only one person you can blame, isn't there?

Unprotected sex in LOS is just plain dumb - there's been enough threads about it and HIV and other nasty's on the board. You would think people would have listened and taken notice by now. :dunno::banghead:

Sigh. To take the contrary view here. Lets see. That bad old doc actually wanted to find out what you had before prescribing a course of antibiotics. Well, that must be pretty close to malpractice (not!).

>i guessed right away that this was chlamydia

Excellent. No need for cultures, no need to determine what sort of bacteria is was, just rely upon your "guess".

Point is here, is that there are something like 25 different STD's, as well as a few other things that could give your symptoms.

A good example might, for example, be bacterial prostitis, which can be caused by:

Escherichia coli. Klebsiella, Proteus, Enterococci and Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, or anaerobes such as Bacteriodes species.

And, just as a matter of interest, Cipro is a standard antibiotic regime for ill defined bacterial prostitis....hmmmm.

However, the point (partly) here is that you have *assumed* you have an STD. maybe yes, maybe no. You doc (bless his little heart) wanted to find out *exactly* what you had before rushing off to pescribe something to treat it. Sounds pretty fair to me (esp given that the cultures have come back negative so far).

And to the other posters on this thread. There is some shit bad advice in here, some of which borders on actually harmful. If you are gonna post stuff offering advice on medical treatments, know what you are on about first, please.
