4. Varanasi, India - the shithole of all shitholes - Chennai & even Delhi (which is pretty shitty) seems rather nice in comparasin!!

Hi WF.

Agree that Varanasi is one of the filthiest places I've ever seen, but it definitely is unique and has a real atmosphere of spirituality about the place.

Did you get out on the river in one of the boats at dawn? I don't think I've ever seen anything like those cremation ghats at dawn. It's totally amazing. I counted 4 human corpses floating down the river past our boat. It's really freaky. Words fail you when you see it for real.

Yes, it's filthy... there's literally the smell of death in the air, its a total sensory overload and something I don't think I could handle again, but it is one of the most unique places I've ever seen.

I can't say that I did get in a river boat, but maybe I should have!

Agree with the filthy vs. unique observation it's always some sort of borderline whether a place gets the positive or negative adjective but in my case I never really gave Varanasy a fair chance as I choose to trust the bad rumours & virtually rushed thru after a quick glimpse on the 'corpse river' (river of death) :(

Calcutta is a similar place where the bad vs. the good parts made a very mixed impression on me together with being my first entry into India & 'luck' had it there was a severe downpour one day causing us to wade kneehigh in filthy water on the 'streets' ;)

I think India has a worst & best place for anyone somewhere in that huge incredible place!!!

Pnomh Penh

East St. Louis, Ill. in the '80s (this city accross the river from St. Louis Mo, was all poor. The whole place. Most cities have a bad part of town. All of East St. Louis was run down and poor)

Caracas

Newark, NJ in the '80s (car jacking capital. Was nicknamed 'the CTC', car theft capital). Not one part of the city was good.)

South Bronx in the late '70s and '80s (even the cops were scared to come there. If you went to a Yankees game you NEVER drove. You took the train with the crowd and left with the crowd. Stay late...and there is no reason other than a death wish...and you were lucky to leave without your wallet....and this is if you're black or puerto rican..hehehe...any other ethnicity? show up in a tank)

Hoboken is actually a nice place now. It was only famous for being the hometown of Frank Sinatra years ago and was a working class city. Now they have built big condos and co-ops with views of the skyline and its now fashionable.

Atlantic City was always rough but everyone only knew about the gambling. As a kid, every poor and working class family spent a week's holiday at the 'joizy shore', I recall as a kid that once you left the boardwalk and went a few blocks in, it was the 'hood. I remember one summer as a kid my brothers and I went to a playground to play some basketball and we won the first game and the kids tried to beat us up for winning. AC was a rough spot then and word has it none of the casino money made it to the poor.

Melbourne - Come on, it's ok to Visit, SD's been known to stay there for 4 days in a row!

Auckland I disagree, it's getting a lot better than in the past.

Agra - so sad that a number have mentioned it, and it's home to some of the most beautiful structures in the world, I had no idea just how stunning the Taj Mahal would be, and the red fort etc, all great but the FUCKIN BEGGARS

FARK

There's 30 beggars all selling the same shitty wooden box chess set, you buy one, paying 5 times the price you should, then the other 29 think

WOO HOO He bought one, therefore selling the second one will be easy!

ARGHHHHHHHH

bahrain - I was at the airport for 5 hours once. No water, shops would not take cards or real money. No exchanges. 50c outside, -20 inside. The coldest airport I have ever been to.
