Hugh_Hoy
I'm kind of surprised we don't hear about bars getting torched after some of these incidents. Empty bottles are not that hard to find and gasoline ain't that expensive for what you need and want to accomplish. HH
SatRai
Strange enough I've never seen violent and agressive Thais. I did see agressive people in BKK but they always were western tourists. Last month a fat, pot-bellied westerner pushed away a flower-seller. I think that uncivilized people like this man are just asking for trouble.
drogon
Agree with SatRai, never ever been a witness of a violent incident against foreigners in LOS. (I saw a fight between 4 Thais in soi 22, a guy tried to rob something and was chased by 3 others, when they caught him they handed him to a policeman, no big deal -> although I would not like to spend some time in a cell) I read a lot about incidents (roberries, murders etc..) but never saw one myself while here in "civilized Europe" I can regularly see tourists realising they have been robbed or friends/colleagues having some troubles too....) Hugh_Hoy
Well, I saw one...or part of one years ago on Soi Cowboy. I have no idea what it was about. I was standing outside the Toy Bar when a farang (maybe 25 years old) was back-peddling toward Asoke laughing and seemingly taunting several Thai dudes who were in hot pursuit. He was a tall, slender guy wearing cutoffs and tank top. One of the Thai guys was carrying a stick of some kind...almost like a club. I watched as the farang reached Asoke and rounded the corner north...the Thais in pursuit. Actually, I think only one or two Thais really kept up the chase with a couple stopping at Asoke. Maybe 5 minutes later, the Thai guy who had been leading the charge came back. Blood on his T shirt (no idea who the blood donor was), and minus his stick. That was the only "incident" of a violent nature I've witnessed. Of course, I've only spent one night in Pattaya for every hundred in BKK 55555555555 HH
bibblies
Agree with SatRai, never ever been a witness of a violent incident against foreigners in LOS. Maybe because you're too posh to walk the streets, drogon. Like the Queen, you don't witness much crime. You just get escorted from high class club to club in dark-windowed limos... Being jaded, I tend to walk past these incidents, hardly registering them. So it's difficult to remember. But I can think of a few. Example: Walking past Soi 11 a year or two ago, a few street vendors laying into a middle-aged male tourist. A woman, probably his wife, was looking around crying in a German accent "Help, Help!". (I wasn't going to stop, being on a mission to Nana...) There have been lots more, I'm sure, especially around bars. I tend not to walk on by though because I'm usually going somewhere... ( ) Fuck it, you should hang around Nana Car Park. There's an incident there every few weeks. I remember one a couple of weeks back. Sound of fight, broken bottles, people rushing forward. I hardly looked up but was told by people who bothered that it was a girl bashing a farang. Pattaya's worse for it because the tourists there tend to be younger, more drunk and less culturally aware. cavanami
A couple of Song Krangs ago, three Thais started beating on each other. One was big and could do some kick boxing, the other two small and thin. The big guy beat the crap out of both of them, then he went in his house to take a nap! Too much whiskey and beer and a fight over nothing, something like the big guy wanted a certain music CD played and the other two didn't.
bust
My Estonian house guest say he didn't die either. I will try and get a translation later today. They are nocternal people...
liquidflux
I'm still waiting to hear the stories of the 15 Thais before I make any judgements here.
Old Hippie
Regarding violence in Thailand and farangs, who causes what...I posted about this before, but a few years back, I saw 2 Japanese punks get the shit kicked out of them on SOi Cowboy (started in Shark bar). Basically, they were going to take on everyone, and swung on quite a few guys, even a few Brits. The result was everyone they swung on, took their shots back...so while it was a gang up, they did invite it. No ideas what happened this time around...probably never will really know. Sad someone died, but my guess is, this isn't 100% the fault of either side...not excuse it, just an explanation based on previous observations. wonderlust
It appears that no one died. It's not too surprising that a Mickey Mouse Pattaya news website that talks of an attack with "steal" bars can't get its facts right. While a 15-on-3 attack is disgusting and still makes me not want to go anywhere near a bar that employs male touts, if anything it's surprising that more Russians don't receive a beating at the hands of local thugs. The behaviour of some of them is arrogant and aggressive towards Thais and everyone else. I see there's a Russian disco being opened towards the end of Walking Street. I wonder what would happen if a disco full of Russians got into a fight with some Thais.
