i recall a youtube clip you posted fidel of irish soldiers i think peacekeepers in lebanon doing a little dance on base out in the field. posted to show them as good eggs, nice chaps displaying some frevolity. not critising that but i very very much doubt you'd have posted a similar clip of US marines doing something similar? ...

I might.. I might not.

While I don't totally agree with UN mandated "peace keeping missions", I will point out that our troops are only involved in humanitarian/peace keeping operations. 500 Irish troops are being posted to Chad.

Now, there may be some bad eggs amongst the Irish forces, I recall a case where an Irish soldier was reprimanded for making porn movies while posted overseas.. but I can't recall any case of Irish troops killing anyone, let alone a civilian, ever. I'm sure they've probably killed some people in combat, but not as many as have been lost in combat.

Add to this the fact that i consider the coalition troops in Iraq to be on an Imperialist adventure, something which IMHO is fundamentally wrong.

Fidel / Corinthian,

Could you please both take a step back take a deep breath and ask both of yourselves the question why you are attacking each other.

Fidel,

We do not know each other that well but we have communicated previously and have a feeling of where each other is coming from and I respect your opinions based on your experiences.

Corinthian,

I fully understand where you are coming from, I have (civillian) friends on the northern Kuwaiti Border and in the "Green Zone" and I myself did two trips into Basra as a civillian 2002 so I do sort of understand the stress levels.

Fidel, your fight is not against Corinthian, it is against the US foreign policy that you disagree with not an individual.

Corinthian, I know that it feels Fidel is being personal, but he is only voicing an opinion on the overall not a personel level.

Hey, even I have been guilty of leaving Saudi Arabia after 16 weeks in the desert and saying to myself "Fuckin'Arab Cunts", at the time it was how I felt but in retrospect it was a myopic opinion based on how close I was to the situation.

Opinions are better discussed than argued!

Perhaps there should be a sub forum called "Politics and Religion?"

I remember when the "News" section was added... it appears it is now the 3rd most popular section after "General Discussion" and "Nightlife". I suppose that's just a sign o' the times.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A3145-2004Dec15.html

"Sexual exploitation and abuse, particularly prostitution of minors, is widespread and long-standing,"

''150 allegations of sexual misconduct throughout the country as part of a widening investigation into sexual abuse by U.N. personnel that has plagued the United Nations' largest peacekeeping mission, U.N. officials said.''

hardly isolated either.

note pakistani troops involved. i doubt congolese really want them around despite not being on a 'land/oil grab mission' .....happens elsewhere. serious violation of trust on very vunerable people.

just redressing the balance fidel ok
