Old Hippie
Millionaire? multiple businesses...really? can I have a job? something easy that pays well. Here are my qualifications. I am arrogant, lazy, have no real skills, and like to sleep late. Oh, and I love Whores! As for the guys who live in Thailand, and can't speak Thai...this pisses me off a bit. Simple reason, 1) they live there, I don't and 2) I hate when people come to my country (USA) live here, work here, suck the public tit, and can't speak English, mainly because they refuse to do so. You want to live in a place, make you life and living there, then you should show some respect, and at least try to learn "some" of the language. As for speaking Thai...it does help. Another board member and I drove around Surin, Si Saket, and Buri Ram a few years ago. English was not widely spoken, if at all. Speaking even my crap Thai did make it a better experience for me, and even made a few locals smile. It also helped with getting food and other essentials...like WHORES! The idea that People living in a country have "...no need" to learn the language as it "...is of no benefit to me..." is just plain wrong, and disrespectful to the country you live in. "...Now, if you dont mind. Can someone please talk about the lower Suk hoes and how to extract better rides through language..." I think trying to speak Thai to *SOME* whores mainly the newer ones, who speak no English, makes them feel a bit more at ease, and may make the difference if she stays in the bar, or goes with you. This has happened on a few occasions. Additionally, speaking Thai to whores, makes you look cool to other drunken loser tosspot farang sex tourists. And we all like to do that! Now about my job...? khun_khon_neua
I knew it, you are one of those English 'Teachers' who knows the ex-milkman expat owner AKA CEO of 'Bob's Business English School' That response just confirms how little you know about business in Thailand. Go ahead, I will let you have the last word now.
Mekong
Interesting thread, and if the personal attacks were taken out and the topic to be actualy discussed it could be a decent debate. I understand KKN's POV, working in the same industry I concur that all business is done in English since it is a multinational business. Once you meet english speaking Thai's you tend to meet others and then socialise with the circle. All the Thai's I class as friends (some are relatives) all speak English to some level from basic conversation to fluency level (why did I marry her), even my father in law was speaking English back in the sixties, he proudly tells me that he learned it so he could Rip off the American Air Force in Ubon during Vietnam, he is a character. So I believe that it is possable to live a good life and be able to communicate with a small percentage of Thai's quite easily, which may be enough intergration for some people. I once was guilty of the same. Since the day I made the concious effort to actualy learn Thai and communicate in it my level of "Comfort" here as gone up tenfold, away from the work enviroment I make the effort to speak Thai even to Thai's I know who are fluent in English, in fact I have had many a conversation where the Thai speaks English and I was speaking Thai. At home with the wife its probably 50-50 Thai / English except when we are arguing, Her english is better than my thai by a long way. But this thread was about Thai and Bar Girls, Yes it does help. I have not been active in the bar scene in Thailand for many a year now, some people have the 100 mile rule, I have the other country rule, but I will hit the bars when a friend is in town as I have been doing for the past 5 nights. My Buddy a Thai Virgin but who has been in Asia for 9 years tells me it is more fun when he is hitting the bars with me as a translator than when he is out alone even my Thai is better than your average BG's English. In Conclusion it is possable to live in Thailand without speaking Thai, but if you do you can LIVE here. As others have pointed out, it is nice to be on the MTR or BTS, down at the market or in a mall and be able to understand what is being discussed by those around you, it shatters the bubble. As I mentioned previously for the first few years here I was english only and "thought" I had it good, but now it is better. Go ahead, I will let you have the last word now. Well, if bank balances is the score card for successfully understanding Bangkok's business environment, always happy to compare with a salry man such as yourself. As for the last word, thanks. I always like to have that, complete with Thai accent. [Poor attempt at an insult in Thai removed - KS]
bibblies
I think I and others pretty much said the second part of what you said already but now it's come from someone who doesn't "spend all his time with hookers", kkn might actually listen. As for personal insults, I didn't make any. I simply questioned the logic and attitude. I'm willing to bet that kkn is the most frequent user (and first wielder) of the (rather unnecessary) ' ' emoticon in any discussion so it's pretty ironic that he should try to cry about 'personal attacks' that weren't. frede
[[Poor attempt at an insult in Thai removed - KS] May I humbly ask a question: Why when I tell the poster KKN that he ***** CEO ***** for money, you edit it? Yet when he calls me and Bibbles wankers, you let that ride? Now, I realise you dont like me or my posts and you find me to be a 'vile individual'. And, as I have said, I find you dull and lacking charisma but surely moderation must be universal? Anyways, never mind. Back on subject. It seems the general consensus is: 1. Using Thai can keep away the more mercenary BGs 2. Using Thai with Hoochies staright off the farm, makes for a relaxed BG and almost always guarantees a superior ride. 3. To truely understand the BG, speaking in her tongue is the way forward Nice Gents, I reckon this was a good thread, along with the opposite opinions, even KKN, I enjoyed this banter.
