They're fucking control freaks them wardens. Mine have said I can have a coat that fastens at the front if I stop messing myself.

Bastards. They've cut my internet privileges down to 5 minutes a day...it's hardly enough time for a good hand-shandy. What are you in for?

I have heard from many expats in LOS that one should just make a copy of their passport and leave the orginal locked up at their hotel. It seems there are pro's and con's to doing it or not doing. I always carry my original passport; I am not apt to losing things.

But I have two questions:

When you are in your home country, do you make a copy of your driver's license (a government document) and keep the original in your safe at home in case the cop wants to see it?

What would a cop in your home country say if you gave him a copy of your driver's license?

In the USA they would look at you like you were an idiot.

Is logic kicking in yet...?

Why would I make a copy of anything in hoe land - if I loose it it's EASY to get replaced plus where I come from the cops are basically honest.

Reverse argument is "Do Thai's make copies of their passports to carry around"?

No - they don't need too - plus all my Thai ID (Drivers License Health Card Tax Card Etc) has always been accepted as acceptable id - by real and shonky cops alike.

I fail to see any logic in your argument :)

Yes, in my (our) home countries, no need to carry copies.

When I am in Thailand, not my home country, I do carry a copy of the passport and on the back side of the paper, a copy of my entry stamp. Also in other countries, such as in the Middle East, where I have needed copies, even in Singapore as to enter certain areas in Singapore (shipyears, loading docks, etc) you are required to leave your passport or a copy with the security staff before they will allow you to enter.

So far in many, many years of being stopped and shaken down (minor tea money, like 100 ~ 200 baht) they never ask for the passport and my USA ID or International DL has always sufficed.

in the UK no need to carry the original documents or photocopies if stopped by the Police.

you have so many Days to produce them at your local Police station.

not that i have a driving licence since 1996 when i got a ban and i've never got round to applying for a replacement when the ban finished.

i would never keep any original documents in the car in case the car was stolen or burnt out.

imagine the hassle of replacing them.......

Just to add some spice to the story, this is an email I received today about this whole issue:

"I've consulted with our lawyers here and they confirmed what I thought which is that there is nothing illegal about possessing or buying Viagra or other ED drugs for personal use. The crime is committed by the people selling not those buying or using. If you were found with a quantity which suggested it was not for your own personal use then you could be charged with possession for sale but possessing one tablet of Viagra is most certainly not illegal whether you bought it with or without a prescription.

I also wondered whether the 2 people who ripped off the farang in this story were actually police. Perhaps they were fake police out to make a few baht? The victim may want to file a complaint with the tourist police or the local police for Ekamai bus station (which I think is either Phrakhanong or Thonglor but I'm not sure)."
