WARNING: Ekkamai shakedown!!

Just to add some spice to the story, this is an email I received today about this whole issue:

"I've consulted with our lawyers here and they confirmed what I thought which is that there is nothing illegal about possessing or buying Viagra or other ED drugs for personal use. The crime is committed by the people selling not those buying or using. If you were found with a quantity which suggested it was not for your own personal use then you could be charged with possession for sale but possessing one tablet of Viagra is most certainly not illegal whether you bought it with or without a prescription.

I also wondered whether the 2 people who ripped off the farang in this story were actually police. Perhaps they were fake police out to make a few baht? The victim may want to file a complaint with the tourist police or the local police for Ekamai bus station (which I think is either Phrakhanong or Thonglor but I'm not sure)."

I 'consulted' with my wife and she says with prescription 'no problem', no prescription 'maybe have problem'. To me, that FREE 'consultation' is what I go by.

Yes, but what about the Valium, which the OP said was the source of their interest. It is plainly on that list Mekong posted...

These Ekami shake-downs have been going on for years. I was stopped twice a few years back by cops and questioned, and once searched. That would be in the early 2000's, 2003 maybe. I've heard of others having this crap pulled on them as well over the years. The thing that truly pissed me off was they wanted to search my wallet as well. Great, then they get to see how much cash you are carrying and adjust the 'fines' accordingly. I'd imagine some guys maybe put their V in their wallet? Who knows. Just another on-going scam targeting the farangs.

One day these twats are going to ruin their tourism industry big time. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Best defense I've found is to act like you understand and speak NO Thai, and also, act like you can't understand a word of their usually crappy English. :)

Nothing happened to me as I do not use V, Valium or Viagra, and had nothing on me they could use against me.

This has been going on for years though.

maybe some people like to just give away 10' date='000 baht and say oh well. i got screwed on that one. they are the people who get conned all the time. i stand up for myself.

ok hows this. i disagree with the cops (politely). i tell them i want a lawyer. i get chucked in the slammer. after 24 hours of no lawyer no nothing i think fuck it ill pay the cunts this isnt working. then i pay them and i humbly eat my words.

But, there's another scenario. i insist on speaking to a lawyer and become a problem case to them. they give up and let me go for nothing or a much more minimal fee (ie the cash ive got on me or something small to let them save face).

either way, YOU KNOW THAT AT ANYTIME YOU CAN GET OUT OF THIS SITUATION ITS JUST A MATTER OF HOW MUCH MONEY ITLL TAKE. If things get serious and these guys clearly arent going to let you off then you bite the bullet and pay BUT NEVER EVER THE AMOUNT REQUESTED. YOU PAY AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.

im sorry in advance. im back to being humble again.[/quote']

Please...no need to be sorry. As well as being humble, it would appear that you are also very learned in the intricate ways of the Thai Justice System... I salute you!!

It also seems you really know how to get the maximum "Bang for your Bucks"...again I salute you!!...

Perhaps you would be so kind as to help me make the most of my next visit...it will be my second trip to LOS and I won't have much cash to throw around....

I was thinking that...If I buy a cheap bottle of Vodka Duty free, I cud take it to the Bars with me and just pay for "mixers"....that way I'd save money and be able to select a "gem" from the Nana carpark every 3rd or 4th nyt...

What do you think would be a "fair & reasonable" Corkage fee to pay to the Bar???

Cheers DS

bringing the bottle to the bar wasnt my idea it was ur girls. if that isnt cool then she shouldnt have told me to do it. i was happy to pay the corkage...just not the rip off lady drinks that had been added to the bill cause they thought htey could scam me. sorry i fucked u over but karmas a bitch.
