WorldFun
The PM asks a very valid question: "why were fireworks allowed inside the building?" I say he will not allow (an obvious) cover up this time... http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/30092280/PM-questions-why-fireworks-lit-inside-pub For the juicy stuff an interesting report at the end: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jan/01/thailand-bangkok-fire-deaths
WorldFun
The cause is indicated to be on the organizers (which sounds more likely than Thai Raths version of random fireworks lit by tourists/foreigners): "One man, Somchai Frendi, who was inside the pub when the fire broke out, said the blaze was caused by a "special-effect" firework to usher in the New Year. It made the ceiling, which was made largely of inflammable sound-proof materials, catch fire which spread very quickly." http://news.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/Asia/Story/A1Story20090101-111706.html Question then remains: did they have (recent) fire insurance? 1 Singaporean confirmed among the 59 deads http://www.mysinchew.com/node/19710?tid=
gobbledonk
Ms Crazypants isnt answering my text, and her phone goes to a service, and I've never had that message before - it *is* a new phone, so I am hoping that she is just sleeping off a big night. Worst part is waiting and wondering if she is OK - amazing how turning on the news and seeing 'one more tragedy' takes on a whole new dimension when someone you care about was in the vicinity (they normally go out to the burbs to a Thai-only place, and I am really hoping that was the case last nite ). Neon Ninja
"One man, Somchai Frendi, who was inside the pub when the fire broke out, said the blaze was caused by a "special-effect" firework to usher in the New Year. It made the ceiling, which was made largely of inflammable sound-proof materials, catch fire which spread very quickly." This does sound almost exactly like the Great White/Rhode Island fire mentioned earlier: From Wikipedia: "The fire started about 11:08 PM, just seconds into headlining band Great White's opening song "Desert Moon," when pyrotechnics set off by the band's tour manager, Daniel Biechele, ignited the building's flammable soundproofing foam." Terrible stuff, and an avoidable tragedy. Absolutely criminal that it would happen again. -=/NN
