Came across this grisly story in Thairath today:

Brutal killer decapitates victim and hangs head from the Rama 8 bridge (22/02/09)

On the 22nd February at 14:00 Police Lieutenant Colonel Atcharat Mentanon (sp?) of Buanmongkorn Police station received a report that a human head had been discovered hanging from the Rama 8 bridge in the Khwaeng Wat Sam Phraya district of Bangkok. He hurried to the scene with Police Colonel Chawilit Prasopsinlapa, Deputy Metropolitan Police Commander and doctor from Sirirat Hospital, officials from the Scientific Crime Detection Division and Por Dek Teung volunteers.

The crime scene was the Rama 8 bridge where a white rope was attached to the railings and extended below the bridge about 5 meters. There was a human head attached to the end of the rope which extended down towards the river. The body was missing and inspection of the head determined that it was an approximately 40 year-old foreign male of unknown nationality.

The rope was knotted to the left ear and the head was contained in a white cloth branded bag. A preliminary investigation by the doctor surmised that the victim had been dead not more than 8 hours. The neck was torn from the neck to the occipital bone consistent with it having been cut with a sharp instrument. The neck bone was missing and the eyes were filled with blood. In addition to this, written on the bridge railings was a message in English which could be summarised by: "I want...but can't come back...the thing that's needed." and "I came here to meet you". Officials are using this as evidence.

Police Colonel Chawilit stated that an initial investigation found just the head which from its appearance didn't suggest suicide but it would be necessary to wait for the results of the doctor's autopsy whether the head was torn from the body or cut with a knife. If it was suicide it would be necessary to wait for the body to show up to check. Closed circuit television pictures from Public Works' Department cameras on the bridge have been requested to check if there was any unusual activity on the bridge at around 08:00am and any witnesses appearing on the cameras will be asked to come in for questioning.

didn't suggest suicide....

Well if he got the drop wrong, the body could have been torn from the head and the rope could still be hanging onto the remnants of the neck.

The accepted way of positioning the hangman's noose is to put the knot under the left ear to aid in neck breaking.

Head of foreigner found hanging from city bridge

The head of a foreigner has been found dangling from the railing of the Rama VIII bridge in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district.

Pol Lt-Col Atcharat Hemthanon, of Bowon Mongkhon police station, said the head was found hanging 5 metres below the bridge early yesterday afternoon.

Police found a message written in English saying, "I want it but I didn't get what I want," and, "I came here to see you".

Pol Lt-Col Atcharat said he received a call about the head about 2pm.

He went to the scene with Pol Col Chawalit Prasopsin, deputy commander of Metropolitan Police Division 7, a medical specialist from Siriraj Hospital, a team from the Scientific Crime Detection Division and rescue volunteers from Por Tek Tung Foundation. The specialist from Siriraj said the head was probably severed with a sharp object, and belonged to a Western man in his 40s.

He estimated the man was killed about eight hours before the examination.

A Puma-brand white polyester bag was also found attached to the rope used to hang the head from the bridge.

Pol Col Chawalit said police were searching for the man's body.

Investigators do not believe he took his own life.

Police investigators will ask for video footage from two surveillance cameras installed on Rama VIII bridge, and question any witnesses who appear in the footage, Pol Col Chawalit said.

"Right now, police want to identify the dead man," he said.

If investigators could contact the man's relatives, they might be able to find out the cause of death, he said.

Bowon Mongkhon police have asked police in the nearby Chana Songkhram area, which is popular with foreign tourists, whether anyone who fits the man's description has been reported missing.

Severed foreigner's head found hanging from a bridge

The head was apparently put in a plastic bag and hung from the bridge's railing.

When it was found at about 2pm, the plastic bag was detached from the head, revealing a gruesome sight. A doctor estimated the victim had been dead for at least eight hours.

Two sentences, "I want but I cannot â?¦," and "I came to Bangkok to be you" were found written on the railing, said police chief Colonel Chavalit Prasobsilp.

He will wait for autopsy results before concluding how the head was severed from the body.

"We will check the security cameras at the bridge and see if anything related to the incident was captured," he said.

The media was requested to publish clear pictures of the victim's face to help police identify him.

"We need to urgently know who the victim was," he said.

I find incredible these lines (either a bad translation or are they that "not bright")

"Investigators do not believe he took his own life."

Sure, he might have cut his own head then went to the bridge to hang up there....

"they might be able to find out the cause of death"

Cause of death could possibly have been caused by the said head having been separated from the body?

Maybe?
