If my pea brain remembers correctly, the USA (Microsoft) went after some pirates in China, spent $$$ to get them in court and won like $20K from the court ruling. This was one pirate outfit out of thousands(?) in China, but they did win and they were pleased.

There are several country that are worse then LOS, IMO. Taiwan and Singapore did put a huge dent in the pirates in their countries.

Latest from the Post:

<< Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said the vendors attacked the officials after they tried to seize their pirated goods.

Mr Abhisit said he would ask Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot, who oversees the government's anti-piracy campaign, how to avoid future clashes.

"The government must continue to carry out its policies to suppress pirated goods and to confront unlawful influence," he said.

'Countering goods piracy is a policy of this government."

However, the government would also take action against any official who was found to have used excessive force against the vendors.

Mr Alongkorn said his ministry would crack down on pirated goods and intellectual property violations every two days. Patpong Road would be raided again in the next two days. "The government cannot allow their unlawful businesses to continue," he said.

I've been told the police chief of that district is the plum job in Bangkok. Allegedly, it takes millions of baht in "gifts" to higher ups to get the assignment. He makes it back soon enough in "tea money" from the bars and other nightlife businesses. Sounds believable.

Sounds highly believable....!

What I find weird though, is why target just Patpong? Or are we to see yet another moral crusade...they do get rather boring and ruin Thailand's reputation abroad. This is supposed to be a fun place. The lure of Bangkok is that you can do such things as buy fake stuff...well, that's one of them anyway.

So what's next???

Patpong is the nightlife area for tourists. Not many make it over to Nana or Cowboy. So maybe this is meant for show? Strike the market best known to foreign visitors so they will spread the word that Thailand is taking action against pirates.

:hmmm:

p.s. I'm pretty sure NEP is also under the Lumphini precinct.

...a pathetic show staged solely for the benefit of the us embassy...after the us trade dept left thailand on their worst-offenders list...

the real thailand is on that list is of course the compulsory licensing of several patented drugs...not the availability of fake rolex watches...

Remember when Panthip was being raided almost every week about 6 or 7 years ago? Just sort of coincided with Bill Gates' complaints about software piracy.

You're right about the drugs though. Who really cares if someone knowingly buys a fake handbag or watch.
