LizardKing
Gik existed just fine before 2002. It meant "platonic friend" (implied being of opposite sex). But yes, that soap opera (damned if I recall the name either) changed the meaning into "fuck buddy" LOL!
LizardKing
I'll throw a quickie in while we wait for PM. AfterSkool is well known as one of the oldest bars on Soi Cowboy. Let's have some fun with its "provenience." a) It wasn't always there. Where did it move from? What was it called then? c) It had a few neighboring gogos in the original location. What happened to them? For the real old fucks out there who haven't killed all your braincells yet: d) Name one other name it used (I can think of two). e) What year did this move to Cowboy take place? rookie
(d) AfterSkool - originally Sunshine, later change back from AfterSkool to Sunshine Don't know the other answers...
robaus
>>PM's turn - I hope he keeps it local rather than pulling it off a quiz web page. Conversely, there's also a danger of making questions too specialist. You may limit your audience, and the thread dies. I went to a quiz recently where every second question was about World Cup football.... lots of moans and groans, and switching off from those not interested. As Uncle Abe said "You can't please all the people all of the time" IMHO I prefer general knowledge questions with a challenge in them somewhere. As a Pattyaite? I have very limited knowledge of the Bangkok scene. I suppose, just leave it up to each question setter as to what his preference is. Or maybe have two questions running concurrently. Nervous God
Robus - where on THAI360 - ex NANA plaza - if we can't answer (or learn) about Thai nightlife - we should move to the world cup web site.
Flashermac
The word "Gig" or "Gik" was first used in a national soap TV show, and quickly taken up by the general population. Before then I have no idea if it existed but it wasn't part of the national lexicon. So for such a common word - amongst Thais and Farangs, it's a pretty recent development. No idea the TV show except a lady I worked with watched it and taught me the meaning. GIK comes from the English word "gig" - as used by musicians to describe a temporary job. It originally was used by Thais to describe a temporary BF or GF, one that most likely would be dumped fairly soon. In the same way, FAN (or faen) entered Thai decades ago from the English term sports fan. As one could be a fan of a certain team, one could also be a fan of a certain individual. If a new word suddenly pops up in young folks' Thai, look for its origin in English. That's quite likely where it came from.
Flashermac
AfterSkool had another name? So where did it move from? I don't remember it in the Gaysorn Plaza area and it certainly wasn't in Saphan Kwai. Maybe it was Reform School?
LizardKing
Well, if Frash doesn't know, and Robaus thinks his thread is being hijacked, I'll spill it. Rookie got it, sorta. [color:purple]a) It wasn't always there. Where did it move from? It was one of the infamous soi 16 bars, on Sukhumvit between 14 & 16. [color:purple] What was it called then? Sunshine. [color:purple]c) It had a few neighboring gogos in the original location. What happened to them? They became the seed for NEP. They were Rosemary(s) 1 & 2, Three Roses and Rainbow. [color:purple]d) Name one other name it used (I can think of two). Sunshine, Dee Ja, and Bumble Bee. Maybe more? The Sunshine name is still around on some signage since I think that's still the name on the license. It was not more than a couple of years ago anyway. I must look again next Cowboy trip. [color:purple]e) What year did this move to Cowboy take place? 1982. Same year as the others went to NEP, because of the road works that made Ratchadapisek into eight lanes.
