Still have to deal with some medical issues, but these are also affordable to treat here so am in no hurry to rock the boat. My two baht worth. Traveling is a real hassle these days with all the crowd, security and packed planes. Rather than mosey on over to the 7-11 for a couple beers to relax with, I would prefer yoga/treadmill/cycling or working/lounging/swimming around a pool in the yard. But in my case, what would keep me from going back to SEA would be health reasons. I've had issues with lower back/knee/heel/hip pains. I retired early almost 25 years ago and old age is catching up to me.
Vintage_Kwai
☺️ Yes, travel is a hassle these days. Since my last visit to SG pre-covid, I've had two stent procedures and one cataract done. One waiting list for next one. As for relaxing, I have a collection of (semi-vintage) organs, most around the 30 year mark, to keep my mind on track. The neighbors also like to walk around in the evenings so I get a bit of exercise too. Though the wife prefers the treadmill. Just don't want to get flooded out again.. (2011 was bad, wife rebuilt after we raised the land). Hanging on here with nowhere to go and not really wanting to go anywhere anyway..

Further, I like the outdoor lifestyle and for much of the year Thailand is just too hot to spend a lot of time outside, especially in Bangkok. In New Zealand I am outside all the time, and enjoy doing long hikes.... A single family home with no Home Owners Association is the way to go. One that is close to city center, next to a multi-use trail (MUT) for long hikes and bike rides would be really nice. Fortunately, I've been living in a house like that for over 40 years. Old Hippie
38 years, several trips a year and it still hasn’t lost it’s appeal…some things have changed, but the lure of the place is still there and still strong.
My Penis is hungry
Let's see what you say after living without leaving for 2 years There's a favourite book in Oz that was part of the school curriculum when I went to school. The main character left Australia and never visited for 7 years. Because biologically that was the time he had been told it took for all the matter in your body to be replaced. Essentially youshit out your home country if you never visiting 7 years. I did the same, and it does change your outlook a lot, never stepping foot in your own country for even a brief visit for 7 years, and living away is a bit of a mental switch as opposed to regular visitors or even extended visits

However, I never really had a home or family, so any sense of that is not really there. Thailand permanently will be a big final step. I toy with taking my full vacation at the end of one year and the beginning of another year and basically just stay here for 6 months and see if I can really make it fit or if I get sick of it too soon and decide it isn’t for me. Of course it all depends on how bad this asshole in DC fucks things up and if I’ll have enough/any money to retire with…
My Penis is hungry
Not so much about going to a "home" but having Thailand as your "home" and finding the little things that long term come to light
itsmedave
I last lived here 20 years ago and just moved back. Cost of living and easy lifestyle were huge reasons (also the Russian asset currently sitting in the White House and shitting on America) We considered Jomtien and Hua Hin and decided on Hua Hin. The infrastructure is great here and you can still get all the Western things you want without the high prices that ate in other parts of the country. Bangkok and its traffic and relentless energy were never an option...although I do miss the gogos and crazy times we had there. Been here 4 months now and enjoying it...3 bedroom villa with pool (furnished with free pool service, gardening, and internet) for 23k baht a month 15 minutes from the beach is hard to beat. The bolt/grab system has made life so much easier as well. And...Bangkok is only 3 hours away...
Old Hippie
Hua-Hin would be my retirement spot, but wife is from Surin, so we will spend most of our time up there…er, maybe…we also like the beach area near Jomtien and Rayong/Ban Phe…tough to say…prices are going up in Surin…western food items and foreign beers/booze are expensive for sure…but over all, I thin better than the USA…where staying means working till you die…
