I have no criticism of orphanages in Thailand nor of helping or supporting people in need or distress. My post must not have been clear, indeed amazingly unclear if that was the interpretation and left the impression that I ?? feel pretty smug and delightful at laughing at others misfortunes ? ?, so I will expand on it.

 

My beef is with Buffalo Bill and my disgust and outrage at his behavior,

 

I can not begin to understand how giving a child the curse and burden of carrying a name derived from and linked to a pornographic sex site and/or NEP and/or a Japanese porn star will enhance her self esteem or her quality of life as she grows up and tries to make her way in the world. Especially with the substantial disadvantages with which she starts her new life and the importance that Thais attach to image and face.

 

What in God?s name was the motivation here.

 

Does it seem that there was careful, if any, consideration of the best interests of the mother and child, and in particular the best interests of the child, that were paramount here in the naming of the child.

The tenor of this board has been to treat all and Thai girls in particular with dignity and respect as fellow human beings notwithstanding that many of the girls work in the sex industry and there is zero tolerance for any suggestion of the exploitation of children, pedophilia or under age sex activities.

 

I can see zero respect, consideration or dignity in the way and in the outcome of the naming of this child. Quite the opposite. It was a disgusting exploitation of a child and a blatant use of the situation to satisfy a sick and perverted 'phantazy'.

 

I recognize that these are strongly expressed views and if they offend anyone here, or get me banned from this board, well then, so be it.

 

It is indeed unfortunate that I strike a sour note in a thread that has developed into a very worthy and welcome discussion of ways to help the disadvantaged.

 

But I believe that children are innocents, and that they should be protected, volubly and forcefully when necessary, against any form of abuse or exploitation. Defended vigorously whether that abuse and exploitation is from sick sex sought by pedophiles or used as a source of crass and obscene amusement and titillation by the perverted exploiting their position and the distressing circumstances of the child for ?the thrill of the bizarre?.

I think you read way too much in the name. First of all, how many people would associated Nanako with a Japanese porn start? No offence, but I think you are about the only one.

 

Secondly, while Nana is not a common nickname, it is also not unheard of as already shown here by some examples (I too know a Nana by the way). So, again, I think you are the only one that sees the association with something bad.

 

Finally, I have met Buffalo Bill on several occassions and have the utmost respect for him. Respect that has only grown after seeing what he did for this girl and her mother. It is unfortunate that you want to see this differently.

in all fairness, the name Nanako has nothing to do with porn. It's a quite old fashioned Japanese girls' name. The meaning is Nana=seven and ko=child or girl, hence the seventh child.

 

Maybe this is a lucky number for this baby, who knows?

strong words again , I try a clarification. Firstly, I do in no way indentify this board with the sexual practices you did mention in your first post. They are discussed here , as there are other subjects. Anything you find here is legal and part of human activities which then you may find disgusting or not. I do indeed have an ironical distance to a lot what I read here but I nevertheless very much like the Nana-thing as a whole. You do not know what I have in mind when I think "?Nanaplaza-board"?, but I do. What, by the way, are you looking for on your occasional visits here ? Rhetorical question only.

 

In no way this little girl is in any conflict with what has been accepted as her name now. Names of Japanese pornstars are of no meaning to me; If you wish to decide for a name which has guaranteed never been used by a pornstar you might end up with Maria Innocentia. The interesting thing is that I did not make any secrets about the origin of my idea and let THEM decide what to do. Point was that the mother is catholic and desperately wanted her girl to be christened. The real heroes in that story is a group of Thais anyway who gave up their careers to cater for those who have no hope any more.

 

Admittedly , my remark ? They can only have me in that package ? does indeed sound as an arrogant statement because I am the one with the money, I set the rules. Partially that is even true but look at it in the context that I see nothing wrong with the Nana-naming and therefore can have no intention to insult anybody. I am innocent. My ?package ? basically means that i do not guarantee to appear serious at any time .

 

Wowzer, I did have no intention to defend myself against your accusation , but I am basically of the opinion that you are seriously upset and looking at the background of this thread, I do respect that. What you might consider looking at this dirty nightlife-board is the fact that both we have a platform for an intellectual dispute with long sentences and no photos. Should in a foreseeable next case a boy be involved, I promise to propose ? Wowzer ? as nickname and I will tell them I have it from the dirty board again.

I once asked my wife what does Nana, as in Nana Plaza, mean, and she told me that Nana is not a Thai "word" in this instance, but rather the name of the wealthy family that owns a lot of that area. Nana Plaza and Nana Skytrain Station and Soi Nana (both sois) are named after them. They are still wealthy, I guess, and any sexual connotations were added on later and might be associated in farangs' minds only, as far as I know.

 

Excessive PCness can be Oh! so ugly.

My understanding, also. A couple of old threads pointing to the Thai family 'Nana' developing the area, hense it's namesake, and street name.

 

Just wanted to note that I know two Japanese girls in Japan named 'Nana'. Not unusual, and has no sexual connotation attached what-so-ever.

You shouldn't be feeling sour. What you are doing is to be admired. It has also brought a few things to the attention of the board and will in all probability result in more acts of aid to less unfortunate from members of this board.

I hope mother and child have a long period together. With treatment AIDS can be kept at bay for a long period of time.
