thalenoi
Hi Stick, Quote #1: but severing ties with our roots is something most of us are unable to do. A few do it successfully, but truth be told, most don't. There is no need to severe ties with our roots to discover/learn/enjoy "real Thailand" It's up to the individual to decide how much to throw away and still be perfectly happy. As for the internet, I would need access any place on earth I decided to live. Remember, 10 years ago, no such thing Quote #2: So the next time someone tells you that they know the real Thailand and you don't, don't get too worried or upset at it. Odds are that you are enjoying yourself a lot more than they are! Ok, you're a writer, but why would a steak eating farang in need of a chat with an other white face be enjoying himself a lot more than the farang living in his "real Thailand" ::
Guest lazyphil
<<But yes, I admit it, I DO crave such things as intelligent conversation from intelligent Westerners and am lucky to have many bright, articulate friends here in Bangkok. That is something I would struggle to find in the Thai countryside.>> But does the coversation ultimatly end up LOS talk sooner or later?--np is where i get my fix of thai chit chat (i find it quite absorbing reading the perpectives of los displayed here) and can walk away from the puter but if i was to only have friends who had the common interest (brotherhood??) of los like expats do, be it in bkk or rural los i would struggle to remain socialable--socialising with friends who have no interest in los/asia is most necesary for me and this would be impossible living anyplace in thailand..... khunsanuk
Hi, "But does the coversation ultimatly end up LOS talk sooner or later?" Can't answer for Stickman, but in my case the answer would be very rarely. At the Friday Gulliver's meetings topics range from world politics to work related stuff to electricity bills to ... Sanuk! Guest
Well these conversations can be had in bkk and rural Thailand!....cant they?...... If the topic is politics, particularly Thai politics, it actually would be difficult to have a serious conversation about that subject in rural Thailand. Not impossible, but harder. khunsanuk
Hi, "my guess/feeling is though that there is an underlying brotherhood under current exists that you cant escape??" Sorry, but I have no idea what you mean with this. Not trying to pull your leg, just confused. Sanuk!

Mekong
To no one in particular Why knock stick? I'd be the first to say that most of his assumptions / observations differ greatly from mine, but that is no excuse to belittle his take on Thai life. Stick wears his heart on his sleeve and tells it as he sees it, if his site was that bad why is "Stickman This Week" a recurring thread? Constructive critisism is acceptable, general abuse is easy ... if you disagree with comments made why not state the reasons for disagreement, better still try to put the hours in that stick does to give us all an alternative website. Keep it up Stick!
Bangkoktraveler
When I went to the police to report about the 4 men who tried robbing me, there was a Thai man present in the room with handcuffs on. He had been brought in for 'deflowering' a young Thai lady. He was a young man, maybe a teenager. From what I gathered, if he could come up with the 50,000 baht the mother wanted, he could go home. I left before he did so I have no idea how things turned out for him. It looked like he did not have 50,000 baht nor did it look like he knew where to get it. I guess if a falang got caught in such a situation, it would be a lot worse.
