Ah, but the problem is that they DO hold power over you and I (assuming you are from the US).

SD, the examples you quote are not about Christians holding power over others, but about legitimate political process. All political factions, from socialist to liberal to moderate to conservative, are using legitimate political means to advance their political beliefs.

Christian spread over several of these factions, mostly right of the center. But they have no monopoly on power. And even at times when Christian are in the position to make decisions (i.e. when GOP is in power), some of these decisions expand freedoms, and others limit them. Just like when other factions pass the laws. Christians (as a whole) would never stand for the recent emminent domain decision which gives goverment (at any level) a right to take personal property. Which is a legacy of the still-but-probably-not-much-longer left-leaning Supreme Court.

In one of the examples you mentioned pro-lifers. I personally want abortion to be legal, for more than one reason. However, what happened in the U.S. is a travesty of justice and a great example of abuse political power. A group of judges made a decision that abortion is a [color:"red"] constitutional right[/color]? What kind of nonsense is that, for chrissakes? Talk about someone having power over our lives!

And regarding violence and anti-social behavior, yes, there are a few kooks among the pro-lifers, but I think the left-leaning crowd (The Nation / Village Voice types, referring to the US magazines, not the Thai paper) are a lot more prone to that than Christians.

OK, I realize we're getting off-topic here so if you respond I'll read it with interest but I'll try not to respond :)

You were right our phil, Moslem traders were dealing in slaves from east africa long before europeans were on the opposite coast. Slavery is condoned in the koran (people of the right hand) and the only countries where it is still tolerated today are islamic countries such as Niger where it is so ingrained that anti slavery laws have made little difference.

A few easy examples come to mind : the crusades, the inquisition, the conquistadores, the slavetrade........

BB, great stuff for alt.history.christian.

Now please fast-forward a few centuries and let's get back on track.

WHAT ??? shove all under the carpet then ?

Thats easy, no ? We are on track here......

Just blame the muslims for being inhuman when the christians did the same, worse and way more......

Ok, how about WWII then ? How about the BS "god save America and lets invade a few countries" ?

Spare me religion, thanks god I do not believe ! :p

We will agree to disagree then. I have no problem with conservatives when they act like conservatives. Indeed, I could be covinced to follow some of their tenents. But I see the past 15+ years of US politics as a highly organized assult on the 1st Amendment by the fundementalist Xtians. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black best expressed the purpose and function of the Establishment Clause when he said that it rests "on the belief that a union of government and religion tends to destroy government and degrade religion."

Some Americans (given your comments, I place you amongst them) reject this dictum, promoting the idea that the government should endorse the religious values of certain members of the community which in effect excludes others. In fact, such violations of the separation of church and state take place with disturbing frequency in American government, at local, state and Federal levels, moreso now than even in the 50s, when we put "God" on the money and in the Pledge.

Regards,

SD
