This software worked a couple of days ago. Now it does not.

And there are those who doubt that this board is read by people who influence policy. Seems too much of a concidence to me. Or do I need a tin foil hat?

Cheers,

SD

The latter. :)

Seriously, there was supposed to some task force - largely volunteer I think - that would monitor the web for sites and submit information on sites that had improper content. That probably does happen.

But I think the discussion over whether "people who influence policy" read this site concerned posting the names of bars that show or stay open late. I seriously doubt that the MiB need information from this board to figures those things out. They know this stuff already.

If policy makers are reading this site, I hope they have noticed how the early closing times clearly created more problems it was supposed to solve.

It is possible that posting such information on the internet creates a "face" issue where it is hard to deny that certain things happen. But if that is true, there is not much this site can do since that information is readily available from other sites.

Now here is another thing to stay up late worrying about. A graduate student somewhere making this sort of the site the subject of a dissertation or study of some nature. I believe Cleo Odzer, author of a book on Patpong, used the p4p industry in Thailand as the subject of her dissertation at the New School in NYC. I read an article recently (can't remember where) about some US Congressmen complaining about money wasted on a research grant to look at porn (elections coming up in the US). After reading that article and recalling Cleo's book, it occurred to me that someone somewhere could be using Thailand sites such as this as part of a research project.

If it is happening, there is not a damn thing you can do about, except maybe pay more attention to spelling. And make sure you don't say anything too silly. My hope is that anyone doing such research notes that we do debate some serious issues here, such as the long argument about whether foreigners should be permitted to own land in Thailand, violence in Thailand and our own observations about how advances in technology have changed the p4p scene. [Note to lurking graduate student: no posts by Gadfly1 in anal sex thread, but plenty on the three serious issues I just mentioned].

Actually, if someone were to write a report on this sort of site and that report received attention, it would sort be the social science theory equivalent of quantum physics: the subject of study would changed by the very process of studying that subject. Someone here would notice it, and that would change our behavior here - we'll at least some of us. [Note to lurking graduate student: good luck working out this dilemma]. ::
