bust
Agree my fellow aviation enthusiast, but modern airports these days have microburst detection equipment, Phuket not being one of them one would guess.
MooNoi
Yes, you'd be right about that, Bust. Which is strange being in an area affected regularly by storms.
..
You also have wind shear in a storm, where the winds suddenly change direction 180, making the wind blow from behind the aircraft. Enough wind speed in that direction can cause loss of lift and a stall that you cannot get out of because of the proximity to the ground. But the microburst (a sudden downdraft) seems more logical here as reports have the tail hitting first. Same consequence, you are too close to the ground to recover. In either case, a pilot has no real options to save it. Cheers, SD

Neo
In that particular accident cited (AA1420) pilot error was certainly a factor. They screwed up. It usually takes more than one thing to cause a crash. At the root of just about every crash, you can trace it back to someone, somewhere screwing up and often a chain of such events. In this case there are reports the cabin announced a missed approach. In that case I can imagine there could have been a failure to follow correct procedure due to many factors in the heat of the moment. Kind of like AA965 hit a mountain because they forgot to retract the spoilers which on top of other screwups doomed them.
buffalo_bill
No idea what caused the accident in Phuket but coastal airports always carry a lot of additional risk , Martinair MD11 crashing in Faro / Portugal due to shearwind , China Airlines MD 11 capsizing at Hongkong new airport .Sometimes it is just bad luck . flacko
I was always tempted to take those budjet airlines to Phuket but then always chickened out for Thai Airways.Better to pay a little more and be safe
elef
A danish newspaper has published a video taken by one of the survivors directly after coming outside. Link
Flashermac
Might have been nice if he'd tried to help rescue others, instead of shooting a video to sell.
Guy Himmaparn
Any idea how long it took for the airport emergency services to arrive? No sign of them in that video...
