You also have wind shear in a storm, where the winds suddenly change direction 180, making the wind blow from behind the aircraft. Enough wind speed in that direction can cause loss of lift and a stall that you cannot get out of because of the proximity to the ground.

 

But the microburst (a sudden downdraft) seems more logical here as reports have the tail hitting first. Same consequence, you are too close to the ground to recover.

 

In either case, a pilot has no real options to save it.

In that particular accident cited (AA1420) pilot error was certainly a factor. They screwed up. It usually takes more than one thing to cause a crash. At the root of just about every crash, you can trace it back to someone, somewhere screwing up and often a chain of such events.

 

In this case there are reports the cabin announced a missed approach. In that case I can imagine there could have been a failure to follow correct procedure due to many factors in the heat of the moment. Kind of like AA965 hit a mountain because they forgot to retract the spoilers which on top of other screwups doomed them.
