Monthly cost of living (Sukhumvit) ?

I'd say that an increasing number of "young professionals" are opting out for, say, 6 months at a time, in the middle of careers simply to take a break. It's becoming more common, probably isn't the "career killer" that old guys( :) ) like Suadam once thought. (I'm talking about IT at least here).

People are getting pissed off with working all the darn time, in a straight line from 18/21 to 65. They take breaks. Why not? The way we live is changing. Globalisation, flexible working to fit lives... Maybe I'm at the extreme end of this but it's not all stiff-shirted 1950s IBM anymore.

If that's true, then great to hear it! About time.

Although my fucked up experience was not that long ago: 2000.

But of course, guys like that would just be on holiday in a third world country, not working a shitty job...

Cheers,

SD

3maybe there are in general two types of expats in LOS: those living on a expat package and then all the other guys

- jobless in farangland

- early retired on a budget

- fugitives with criminal record or arrest warrant

- fugitives (from their profession, family etc.)

- bankrupt in farangland

- lazy to work on a proper job assignment

- adventurers

- sex addict "

Hhmm... you forgot those who live very comfortably in Thailand but don't get any expat package. Entrepreneurs spring to mind and I know a bunch of them who wouldn't be in BKK if their income wasn't way superior than the typical package . Besides entrepreneurs, there are several specialised jobs around that offer decent income for foreigners and give them not only better life standards but also better net salaries than back home although without the expat package. Obviously it didn't workout that way for everyone here but when you can hop on the back of a motorbike taxi to get to the end of your subsoi and feed on somtam, why worry?

fine, take a break! but in serious companies only possible between job changes!

but then you should really take a break and not work in LOS in a bad paid job, in a strange environment with all the uncertainties involved! who is so fucking stupid to do that. take the deserved (if you really think so) vacation, stop to work, burn your money and if it is not sufficient, take a loan and continue to burn the money!

i also wanted to take a sanuk break between my 2 jobs (so far) here in Asia. ended up working at the same time overlapping in 2 jobs for about 4 months (well got also double salary, but had fucking no break at all!)

In serious companies -> You do not have breaks...

You have holidays when this is quiet and when you deserve them.

You want to play hard -> You have to work hard

(if you want the money).

Will have plenty of time to take long holidays later when I retire early.

Now I just enjoy little time I can grab

Drogon, between the 16 hours you spend every day posting on this board, and the 8 hours you spend cranking your dick, I dont know how many hours you actually spend 'working hard'. For God's sake man, get something resembling a grip. I plan to be an indolent cunt for the next 6 months, and I have no problem with that, but I get a little peeved when people post about how hard they are working for their supper - if your respective jobs were that full on, you wouldnt have time to post anything ....

I have time to post -> Because I am usually working by short burts of activity.

Thus I usually have 1-2 minutes between every case.

SQA (software quality assurance) is probably the best paid job where you do not work like crazy (like a factory worker) but where you are required to work long hours.

I just have the board on my laptop while working on the computers -> easy to refresh then post.

My job is not "hard": You just have to learn all the time -> if what I use as a brain works during 9-10 hours then yes I consider this a job where you get tired pretty quickly...

GD: Agree that If I was a factory worker in China or Thailand then I would have far more reasons to complain.

Guest lazyphil

limbos got it sorted. not a wage slave to a 'multi national' corp, runs his own diving company in the sun, now thats 'living the dream' in los :)....not sweating his bollox off in gridlock traffic, oppresive heat and pollution (he'll be too humble to admit this though!)

Maybe some people take jobs just to meet the locals - seems a smart way to get to know a country.

The list of possible expats seems pretty negative.

How about people doing volunteer work? NGO work? People who take jobs with greater challenge an d excitement but lower pay.

There seems to be a obsession with $ values rather than quality of life values.
